Fast Fingers...

Marcus looked up at Desiree and knew that it was better not to argue with her, she was too headstrong and he was beginning to like her for that. It would be better if you were with me he thought but knew that he couldn't say it.

"Okay, I will forget about The Devil tonight and go to the hospital. I will not argue with you."

Even after he said them the words seemed to shock Marcus, What is going on with you. he thought You are falling for your partner. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out his mobile, handing it to Desiree.

Razor

Lights out. Wonders of modern technology.

Razor hit the button on his watch, and a blue light illuminated the watch surface. Everything was going according to plan, and with any luck, Earl would have eliminated at least one of he copper threats.

He quickly tugged his bowtie off, flinging his jacket and shirt to one side, revealing his neck to toe jet black body suit. He always felt a little like Clark Kent in a phonebooth when he changed for a heist. It felt as though the tight muscle hugging suit empowered him, made him something different. To complete the transformation, he pulled a balaclava over his head - effectively blending his whole body in with the darkness, his striking blue eyes being the only visible feature.

Desiree couldnt believe her ears. Marcus Thompson was giving in. She felt almost giddy as she grabbed the phone before he could change his mind. "Score one for the stubborn brunette," She thought to herself.

Shaking her head, she took the phone saying,"We are going to get you out of here now. I am not waiting for anyone else to come down here and start beating up on you and I dont know how many more I can take down." She felt her cheek where Earl had slapped her down. Her jaw was sore and throbbing.

Slipping her arm under him, she helped him stand and placed his arm around her shoulder to support him.

"I will call the station once we are on the road," She told him as they slowly made their way up the stairs. "One thing though,"She said,"We have to use your car-I have no idea where I dropped my evening bag."

The reached the head of the stairs and she guided him through the lobby and towards the door. The Devil was even now robbing the place, she knew it and it made her feel helpless to know she was here and could not do anything about it without putting Marcus in further danger.

They exited the building and went to the car lot and Marcus' car. Recieving the keys from her partner, she opened the passanger door and helped him slide in before going to the drivers seat and getting behind the wheel and putting the key in the ignition.

Looking over at Marcus, she smiled and said,"Make sure you buckle up. I hear the cops in this town real mean about that."

Getting the expected chuckle from him she then turned the key and the car roared to life. Peeling out of the parking lot, she headed towards the hospital. She knew that the station was only a few blocks away but in the opposite direction and she was not prepared to endanger Marcus' life by delays. Either by extra distance or having to answer a million questions.

Flipping open the phone that Marcus had handed her, she dialed the number to the station while trying to concentrate on the road at the same time. She put it to her ear and was rewared by an answer after only the first few rings. "Officer Marshton," The voice on the other end said.

"Marshton," She said into the phone in her best proffessional voice,"This is Detective Ashton. I am on the way to the hospital with Detective Thompson. He is injured and in need of immediate attention."

"Listen carefully because this is what I want you to do. First dispatch patrol cars to the auction house at this address," She recited the address twice to make sure he got it right,"There is a robbery in proggress while we speak. There is also a man secured in the basement that I want arrested for attacking a police officer."

"Second call Captain Harrison and tell him where we are at. Do you have that?," The voice on the other end confirmed that he did and she hung up and handed the phone back to Marcus.

She concentrated on the road ahead now and getting Marcus to the hospital as fast as she could. She wasnt looking forward to talking to the Captian but she sure as hell wasnt going to let him get to Marcus. She didnt know how she was going to prevent him from doing that but she knew she was.

OOC: What to you two want to do now? Should we wait to detail backup getting here until Tyriel and LittleRedDevil can get the robbery done or should we go ahead and let them do it in a flashback kind of way?

[Edited by Isolde on 12-31-2000 at 11:19 PM]

OOC: That is a good point. Me, I just want to go to the hospital and see what happens but seeming as Devil is the originator it might be best to wait....I am so torn.

OOC: I know what you mean...I really love this thread...everyone playing on it is so good!

OOC: I think I got a way to do it, have like us two in the hospital...doing whatever we are doing in there and when Devil comes back then she can do her posts but make it so that they are happening at the same time, will be tricky but can be done.

OOC: How do we get around the fact that Desiree called for backup? The cops are going to be crawling all over the place and she cant do a robbery then.

I would like to work this so we can continue but I dont want to step on any toes doing it. If we can get Marcus and Desiree out of the building than we can continue there...I am sure the hospital thing is going to take awhile. And those two can get the robbery detailed while they are doing it.

How, how, how?

The only thing that I can think of is wait until Devil comes back but I really don't want to do that or I will lose my trail of thought and that is an extremely hard thing to get back

OOC: LOL...ok what if I go back and edit so that Desiree takes Marcus to the hospital in her car and then calls for back up on the way to the hospital. Then they will have a chance to do thier thing and get out before the police get there.

That might work, but only Desiree would be able to go back as Marcus will definitely be in the hospital over night. It just might work.

OOC: Ok let me edit now....

Ok done...go see.

[Edited by Isolde on 12-31-2000 at 11:04 PM]

OOC: It's good, I love the way that you have done it.

OOC: yep, we can but I'll just read what you post first and go on from there if that is okay

Desiree was relieved when she finally pulled the car up to the emergency entrance. She glanced over at Marcus and saw that his complexion was pale and he had dropped off into unconsciousness. She thought his breathing was shallow also.

Screetching to a halt, she unbuckled her seatbelt and ran, barefoot into the doors. She knew she looked a mess. Her fine gown was ripped and, now strapless, her hair was in disarray and she could feel she had a bruise starting on her cheek.

Pushing through people who called her every type of name, she grabbed the first hospital person that she could find-an intern.

In her best "Dont Fuck With Me" voice she told him,"I am a police officer and my partner is in the car. He has taken one or more blows to the head and I believe he is in critical condition. Go get a streatcher and get him in here immediately."

The man looked at her stupified and she gave him a push towards the emergency room desk and said,"Move it NOW!"

Galvanized by her tone of voice and her physical prodding, he ran to do what she said. "Can I help you with anything?." A voice behind her boomed. She whirled to see a doctor standing there. Tall, brown hair, green eyes, she may have found him quite handsome if she had the time or inclination.

"Yes," She said,"I'm Detective Desiree Ashton and my partner has been severly hurt on the job. He is in the car now and I have one of your interns getting a streatcher to get him in here immediately."

The doctor nodded and said,"Very well but from now on why dont you leave the diagnosis and emergency room orders to me, Miss Ashton. I wont arrest people if you dont treat them, deal?"

Desiree's temper flared at his arrogant statement and she was about to respond when she saw the streatcher bearing her partner being wheeled past her and she saw the flash of Marcus' eyes. He wasnt completely out of it after all which was a good sign-to her at least.

She was about to follow the streatcher when she felt the doctor's hand on her shoulder. "I think it would be better if you stayed out here and let me do my work," He said and dissapeared through the swinging doors. Leaving Desiree alone.

Well, not completely alone. From down the hall she could hear a familiar bellow. "Ashton," Captian Harrison yelled.

God, she didnt feel like dealing with this now.

When Marcus opened his eyes and looked up all he could see was a white light and he heard some voices, "Am I dead."

Just then a face appeared and the doctor said, "Far from it, you have received to severe blows to the head. I think that you have a good dose of concussion but I have to give you an x-ray just to make sure."

Just then an orderly started pushing the stretcher that Marcus was on out of the emergency room and to the elevator. The next thing that Marcus knew was that he was under an x-ray machine. He closed his eyes as they took two x-rays of his skull so as to check for anything out of the ordinary, like a skull fracture.

After the x-rays were done Marcus was wheeled back to the elevator then to the emergency room where the doctor was waiting for him. He took the film off of the stretcher and took one look at it before turning to Marcus.

"Well the good news is that it is nothing more than a concussion. You are very lucky though. But, you have to spend the night in one of wards and eat the hospital food I'm afraid."

Marcus looked at the doctor, "That is just a small price to pay. Oh, do you know where my partner is, I want to talk to her."

"You will after you are in your room detective. Now, you need your rest and to get changed into a hospital gown, but I guess that that can wait until after you go to your room."

Marcus was then helped to a wheelchair and taken to a room where he saw a nice, fresh hospital gown waiting there for him. He looked at it and said, "Oh just great."

He then began to take off his clothes.

Desiree braced herself for what was to come and turned to face Captain Harrison. "Yes, sir," She said managing to look him in the eyes.

He approached her and looked her up and down.
"You look like hell, Detective," He said stating the obvious,"And this little farce of Thompson's is going to take some explaining down at HQ."

He looked at her and said,"What the hell happened in there, Ashford? How does a jewel thief-albiet the best jewel thief around-manage to make off with diamonds valued in the millions with two of my officers right there?"

Desiree took a deep breath and plunged in. "It is all my fault, Captian," She said before she could change her mind,"I left my partner and followed someone out of personal reasons instead of because I thought they might be the thief."

"Because I let my personal feelings interfer, I left Detective Thompson in a dangerous situation. Rescuing him from this situation caused us to lose the opportunity to apprehend the thief in the act. I take full responsibility and full repremand as you see fit."

Captain Harrison looked her up and down as if sizing up what she was telling him. Then in a softer voice he said,"Do you know what you are saying, Ashford? What this could mean?"

"Yes, Sir," Desiree said, not flinching,"It means that if I am found wanting on the job that I can be demoted or dismissed."

"And you still stick by your story? Think about that before you answer. We both know that Thompson's obsession with this Devil has gotten him in more trouble than even I know how to deal with. Are you willing to put everything you have worked for on the line for his obsession."

Her voice was steady as she said,"Yes, Sir."

The Captian stared at her for a moment before saying,"Very well. I want the report on my desk first thing Monday morning."

"Yes, Sir," She answered but she had every intention of getting it filed as soon as she left the hospital. She wanted her version of what happened filed, not Marcus' and by the time he left the hospital, it would be too late.

Just then the doctor approached them and broke her train of thought. Looking from her to the Captain and back, he said,"You can have fifteen minutes with him but that is it. He has two concussions and I am going to be keeping him overnight." Staring hard at both of them he said,"And I dont want him upset in any way. My goal is to get patients out of the hospital-not keep them indefinately. Besides, the floor nurse will have given him some pain killers by now and he will be sleeping soon."

The doctor, Abel, by his nametag, walked off to talk with a nurse and Desiree turned back to Captain Harrison. "Please dont go in there," She wanted to say,"Dont go and talk to him. Everything depends on you accepting my story of what happened." She couldnt stand to see Marcus destroyed and she knew his career was the most important thing to him.

As if her thoughts had actually reached the Captain he nodded and turned to walk back to the elevator. "I will talk to Thompson when he gets out tomorrow. Then we are all going to sit down for a nice little chat."

"Oh, and Ashford," He said over his shoulder. "Yes, Sir," "Get yourself checked out too. You really do look like hell."

Her knees almost buckled as she saw him get into the elevator and she hurried to the desk to inquire where Marcus was at. Securing the information, she went into the elevator and pushed the button for the third floor.

Walking straight to his room, she saw that the door was closed and was about to knock when a pretty nurse left the room carring a tray. Stepping in and looking around the corner, Desiree could see Marcus lying on the bed draped in a hospital gown. "Humm," the thought crossed her mind,"It doesnt take a tux to make him look good."

"Oh for...,"She chided herself,"This is no time for that."
Stepping furher into the room she managed to smile at Marcus and joked,"Hey, Handsome. We have got to stop meeting like this."

Marcus turned his head at Desiree's voice and smiled, "Beautiful. I thought that you had left. I wanted to say something to you, something that can't wait. I was negligent in my job tonight and it cost us big, I went to see what Earl was doing and didn't stay to see if anyone went upstairs. I also had my mind on other things and because of that as soon as I get out of hospital I am going to see Captain Harrison and tell him what happened and to accept my resignation because I don't want anything happening to you. You are too good a cop and should never have been partnered with an arrogant, pig headed jerk like me."

Desiree looked at him stunned by his statement. She took a deep breath and brushed hair from her eyes. Little did he know that he wasnt going to have that chance. Not if she was able to get her paperwork in tonight and she planned on it...no matter what.

"Hey, I see the drugs they gave you are working,"Desiree said in a soothing voice as she covered him up with a blanket,"Cause I know the Marcus Thompson I know would never talk defeat like that."

"Come on Thompson," She said pulling a chair over to the bed and sitting down. Reaching out, she took his hand in hers,"I can buy that arrogant, pig-headed part. Hell, the whole precint knows about that...high time you should." She flashed him a smile to soften her statement.

"And Captain Harrison wants to talk to both of us when you get out tomorrow. However...I would think over that resignation bit of yours. This city needs you. You are the only one who is stubborn enough to catch The Devil and everyone knows it," Laughing a bit she adds,"Thats why the put up with you."

"And dont go worring about me. Hey, who was it that took Earl down tonight, huh? I can be a tough old broad when I need to be. So forget about that. I pulled a couple of stupid stunts myself and I already told the Captain about it. I am sure he will look at both sides of the story and do what is fair."

"But I dont want you to worry about that right now. And the doctor gave me strict instructions not to aggrivate you or I would be thrown out on my ass. Dont know why he made a point of it...must know that I get under your skin so much, eh?"

"Anyway, why dont you get some sleep and I will be here until you slip off. Then I have to go. This gig is going to cost us a ton of paper work and I would rather not have it looking me in the face come Monday, okay?"

Marcus looked at her and knew instantly what she was going to do. He knew that he couldn't allow it, he had to do something.
"Okay partner, just watch yourself. I don't want anything happening to you. You are the only person that I want to work with and I mean that."

Desiree just smiled at him as she turned and walked out of the room. As soon as the door closed he got up out of his bed and walked over to the wardrobe, searching his jacket and finding that his mobile phone was there. He pulled it out, flipped it open and dialled up the direct number for Captain Harrison. After it rang for a few seconds another police officer answered it, "Captain Harrison's phone, he isn't here right now. Can I take a message for him."
"This is Detective Thompson, can you put me throught to his mobile."
Marcus then heard another ringing tone and then Captain Harrison's voice, "Harrison here, what do you want?"
"Captain, it is Marcus. I have to-"
"You have to get well, that's what you have to get," Captain Harrison said.
"I have to tell you this Captain, it's about what happened tonight, it is all my fault-"

OOC: HOLY SHIT! You two move at the speed of light. ;) I'm back, but have to get ready for work. I promise to post when I get home. See you in the movies, or something like that.

Devil

Razor

Razor darted through the corridor, silent; leaving no hint of his presence. Momentarily his footsteps came to a halt, and he backed himself up against the wall. He stuck his head around the corner, narrowing his eyes to adjust his visual acuity in the darkness.

A silouette laid motioness against the wall. Razor approached the figure with absolute caution, although in his mind he has already placed an identification to the body.

Earl became recognizable at about ten paces, a frown forming from beneath Razor's balaclava - Shit. Possibilities and contingencies begun screaming through his mind at a million mile per hour, as the unfortanute scenario of having two coppers roam free became reality. And for a split moment his thoughts turned to Mac. Maybe her elegance and beauty in her outfit affected Razor's judgement, but for the first time ever, he was concerned about her safety. He swore silently under his breath, and dropped down onto one knee, and untied the unconscious Earl. He'll be able to take care of himself. he thought, as he sprung back up onto his feet and bolted towards the staircase in search of Mac.

OOC: We keep going on like this and we will be seeing each other in our own soap opera. :)

IC: Desiree exited the door and was walking down the hall when a wave of exhaustion flooded over her. Leaning against the wall, she waited for it to pass and ingnored the stares that she was getting.

As she stood there, waiting for the feeling to pass she suddenly remembered that she had left the keys to Marcus' car in the room and swore. That was the only way she was going to get anywhere, short of hitchhiking.

Forcing herself to push away from the wall, she headed back down to the room and walked in just in time to hear Marcus on the phone to Captain Harrison.

"Shit!," She thought,"I forgot about his damn cell." Moving quickly, and aided by the fact that her partner was drugged, she came up behind him and took the phone from his hand before he could react.

Putting it to her ear she said,"Sorry, Sir but my partner is under the influence of drugs. I will get him right to bed and we will talk to you tomorrow."

Flipping the phone closed before either man could say anything she took a hard look at Marcus-her gaze not giving in any way.

"What the hell do you think you are doing?," She bit out,"Do you have a death wish for your career here or is it really the drugs talking."

As she stared into his eyes she saw it. He knew...he knew what she was planning to do and he was trying to prevent it. Groaning she tried to think how she gave it away. Was she that transparent.

"Ok, Partner," She said in a softer tone of voice,"Its about time you and I had a heart to heart. The last few days have been like something out of The Twilight Zone and I think we need to get a few things straight."

Moving to sit in the chair she had pulled up to the bed, she gestured for him to get back in the bed. When he did, she sat forward and looked at him steadily. Now was the time to lay everything out on the table-well, almost everything.

"First of all, I have to tell you that I already had the 'It's my fault' talk with the Captain and I am ready to file a report saying that I failed in my duties and put your life in danger. Its true-I let some personal feelings destract me from my duties and, by the time I noticed you were gone, your life was already in danger."

"I was following that waitress of yours wondering why she was there without researching my facts only to find out she is engaged to the jewler's son and so had a legitamate reason for being there."

The words were out before she could think about them and she swore the minute she realized what she had done. Dropping her head into her hands she said,"Oh God, Marcus...I am so sorry. That was damn unfeeling of me to just blurt it out like that. I know how you feel about the woman and I should have found a better time and better way to tell you."

Mac ducked out of the vault, and glanced at the watch before stashing it in her purse. It was almost time for the lights to come back on. She had to get to the car, and back into the auction house before the eyes found her again.

She padded down the hall in her bare feet, the silver heels dangled from her hand, she had forgotten how much noise they made. Mac couldn't remember what she had been so worried about. Even with all the people, it had been almost to easy. Razor's goggles had done their job, and she had done hers. She covered her mouth before she let out a loud laugh. She had performed her biggest heist in an evening gown.

A hand shot out from a dark hall covering the scream as Mac was pulled against a strong male body. She knew who it was long before his whisper tickled her ear and sent shivers down her spine. "Relax Jamie, it's just me," his arms seemed to tighten slightly, imprisoning her against his body. "Did you get them?"

She could only nodd. He chuckled at her, "I knew you would. You are after all the Devil." the hand holding her mouth moved to tilt up her chin, just before his mouth claimed hers. Mac couldn't move, could barely breath, but he pulled away, "We don't have time for this now. Come on, we have to go before everyone realizes what happened."
