Farewell Margaritaville

I saw that. So sad. No pretensions, just fun music.

The heavenly band just got incrementally better.

One of those guys on my Bucket List I'll now never get to see.

I'm not a HUGE fan but he did write some great songs, and I've heard his concerts were a party.

The concerts were a more like the world's biggest sing along. It takes something special to make 10,000 people to unite in an evening of joy.
I think we saw him 4 times. One of our daughters was a big fan and we took her at the age of 4 (lawn seats). There were two very nice guys next to us. Between hubby and them she spent most of the night on someone's shoulders so she got to see everything. At one point, she asked "What stinks?" 🤣

Pour out a margarita in his honor.

Gosh. I will do exactly that. Even as a musician, I so rarely go to live concerts of popular music; my preference is classical. But I made a big exception when Buffett was in town, 38 years ago. My only regret about that concert was my date was not my future wife.

I saw him once, in 1978, in an unexpected location: what was then Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. I didn't know that this song is actually a cover of one by Steve Goodman. Goodman was a good songwriter but Buffet was the better singer I think. (Goodman also wrote "City of New Orleans," made famous by Arlo Guthrie.)

They were close friends. I like to think they're busy catching up on the past 40 years right now (Goodman died of leukemia in 1984).

Based on news reports, it looks like this happened yesterday afternoon when I was out for lunch with my wife. We were going to a movie afterward and I wouldn't have to drive for three hours, and I was really tempted to order a margarita for some reason. I didn't order it, but now I see why I was tempted.

I've been a huge fan since 1992, when I saved up my money from working at Arby's to buy his then-new box set, and he inspired me to take a lot of chances that have paid handsomely, like moving overseas. As I said on Facebook last night, "Thank you" really doesn't cut it...but I'll say it anyway.

Just found out Jimmy dues from skin cancer.😪
Have your margaritas with a side of sunscreen.

Yes. Maintaining the tan that was part of his "tropical" image had a price.

From a 2018 New York Times article highlighting the musical about his music. Paul Alexander Nolan is the actor portraying Buffett in the stage play:

Mr. Nolan had just the right vibe. He could do the laid-back thing well; his singing is strong and contemporary. But there is a fatal flaw about him: He wasn't tan.

"He's Canadian," Mr. Buffett said [to Mr. Nolan]. ... "Get to a tanning salon... To me, it's essential to the part. Tourists in Margaritaville are white and turn red. You need to be tan."
