Im bored and I want to talk about fantasy series right now. So fuck it here's a thread.

Whats your favorite fantasy series? What are you watching or reading. Is star wars/40k fantasy or scfi? Why do you love the genre. Are you ready for the mistborn show. Why are dragons in every culture?

Hello! Have you read the Pelbar Saga by the late Paul O. Williams? It's about a reawakening of civilization in America 1,000 years after an accidental nuclear war. One civ in the middle Mississippi valley is ruled by women, descendants of a lady who decided that women should be in control, that's the Pelbar folks, whose towns are shaped like giant seashells because of marauding peoples nearby. The 7-volume series revolves around the reawakening of civ in the former US. Quite good in my opinion.

Oh that sounds interesting. Is that science fiction or fantasy?

I havnt read it. And they must have done their research since the Mississippi valley actually did at one point have a matriarchal society.

science fantasy . . . came out in the 1980s while I was a grad student. Out in the former Utah is a remnant that has horses, there's a slaver society in the former Cleveland area, groups in the Appalachians, slavers south on the Mississippi, and other sorts of remnants that survived. Even some remnants in the Eastern Cities. Then the scientists who've been cloning themselves for 1,000 years . . . . trapped in a bunker south of the former St. Louis.

Oh yeah thay does sound like classic post Apocalyptic 80 sci fi for sure. Time to add it to the never shrinking list of series to get to.

Its always funny how certain decades get different fads of fantasy and sci fi

My favourite fantasy series of all time is the Discworld by Terry Pratchett.
"Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape." -The Hogfather

Grow up to be as cool as Terry Pratchett is a life goal of mine. Be knighted using your own handmade meteor sword. But yeah that is a classic for a good reason.
Please do let me know whenever you get to reading the series what you think of it.
100% will do that than you for the suggestion.

Whats your favorite fantasy series?
Steven Brust, the Vlad Taltosh series and also the other series tied to the same world.

Modern fantasy : Dresden files and The Rivers of London are really good.
What are you watching or reading.
The Marlowe novels by old what’s his name.

Because they embody the intelligent monster that may or may not eat you.

Oooooh really good choice on the dresden files. I think its the gold standard for what a modern fantasy series shoukd be. I am dying for book 18 to release already. I think my brother is on his 7th listen through.

But also all.dragins arent dangerous, like Chinese ones dont really.wat peoole.same with south American ones.

By Crom, it's gotta be the Hyborian Age with Conan!
Oooooh a classic there. Probably as influential to modern fantasy as Lovecraft mythos are to modern horror at this point.

Especially the pre history concept.

And the book covers were softcore porn
Lol we have lost something with the more edgy or simplistic modern fantasy covers and we are definitly missing that old fantasy art. Actually did a leice recently that used some of it.

I want a van so I can get Conan van art on the side, peak 80s style.

Young Adult - Prydain is the best.

Classic Fantasy, Conan (as mentioned), the Elric Saga, Amber.

Favorite Tolkien knock-off: Midkemia (it gets so tedious but I read and enjoyed them all)

Favorite Man I wish you were as good a writer as world builder: The Wheel of Time

Some of my favorite modern fantasy.
NK Jamison’s works, with 100,000 Kingdoms being my personal favorite.
The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie.

Then i must fuck you in the rear.

Of the van i mean.

Oh good becuase then I have an excuse to get a when a van comes a rocking sign made out of wood to hang outside with the sick fantasy van art.
Like a picture she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van...
And that's alright with me 💘
