Everything's Sex

dr_mabeuse said:
For me... What is there? There's sex, there's beauty. Beauty is sex. There's power. Power is good for what? Making beauty (sex) and getting sex, and helping people. Okay, there's another one: helping people.

So there's sex and helping people.

Money... Money is power. We've already covered power. It's heloing people and sex. It's also making people do what you want, but what do you want people to do? Walk around and cackle like chickens? Only maniacs want power for that reason, like Hitler and Pol Pot and this guy who lives down the block who's running for Library Board.

There's knowledge-- But knowledge is beauty (sex) &/or Power (helping people & sex)

What have I left out?

Stockcar racing and Polka music.

Those two are inexplicable.

Famous pro golfer and partier extraordinaire, Tommy Bolt, was once asked which he liked best, golf or women and liquor.

His reply: "I've been playing golf, man and boy, for nigh on 50 years to get money for women and liquor."

Someone once observed that once the basic needs of survival were satisfied ie: hunger, thirst, fatigue and comfort; then sex became paramount in the mind. Money is the pallative for the first four and even number five.

Sex as procreation is a necessity. Sex as recreation is a luxury. Sex as balm for the fevered body and the aching heart: priceless

Define 'sex'.

No, good point really, because the way I define it, it covers like everything.

I remember the day that I discovered that every thing I liked related to sex, and it came when we were talking about the concept of a "sexy job". You can talk about a "sexy" anything, and term means something different for different people, but I quickly saw that for me, everything I liked, I considered "sexy", including such geekly things as organic chemistry, math, model railroading, hardware stores, thick books, stained glass...

I've never been able to pin down what they have in common, but I don't think it's a case of reverse defining everything I happen to like as "sexy". There's mystery involved, and beauty, and power and control, and very often precision. There's very often a gut or genital thrill entirely different from Polish sausage...

Although maybe the library guy wants power to overcompensate for his lack of a sex life? :p

Possibly it's for the same reason that when I put on blue-colored sunglasses, everything is blue? :)

The big primal drives do easily translate into each other, but that seems to me to work equally well in every direction. If I think that power is the universal human drive, I can argue that: money brings power, sex is a way of asserting power, controlling the food is a form of power. But then I can turn around and make it food: I need power to get food, sex as a sensory experience is a food substitute, money gets me more food. And of course, as Dr. M shows, I can choose sex and make that the central drive. Or control. Or security. Or emotion. Or beauty.

Whatever is most important to us personally guides how we see and value other things. Walter Pater loved art and beauty, and so he looks upon conversation, dress, manners, and lifestyles as art - because he values things mostly for their ability to be beautiful. Marx and his followers are interested in economics, and so they look at the same things and see expressions of economic status and foundations. Dr. M might see sex; William Wordsworth might see God and nature.

In its own way, it's wonderful. It can be horrifying, when people choose ugly ideals, but it can also be beautiful to see how many interesting, lovely, useful, or intriguing things different people can see in the same things - and to see how many of them are touching on truth. There's such an immense quantity of truth available in the smallest relationships that it's rather awe-inspiring. Pater, Marx, Wordsworth and Dr. M. might fill volumes each with the truth he can see, and each be wholly right, and still not have exhausted a tenth of the truth that is there.

There is a very good reason to polka. It's a measure of your partner's stamina. If I can carry on an intelligent conversation with a polka partner then I know he will engage my mind. I also know he is able to ride me hard for a very long time before putting me away wet.

Can't help with the stock car thing.

I'll grant that that does make an immensely better oracular pronouncement. The gods favor brevity.

I'm not sure that anything can. It's one of life's great mysteries.

Pistons thrust up and down in cylinders coated with slick lubricant and rubber squeals as you dive into curves on the edge of control, making your chest heave and your heart pound.

It's sex.

However it lacks spontaneity. Step on the gas, turn left and keep going until you reach a checkered flag.

No build up, no teasing, no anticipation. Kinda dull. ;)

Okay, here's a challenge.

How is it sex when you're comforting a crack baby by humming to them in the ICU for their brief painful moments on this earth?

I hadn't been to a race in about 20 years until a few years ago.

I had barely sat down when the noise hurt my ears, i got hit with a chicken bone and had to dodge a beer can. It was then that I remembered why it had been 20 years since I had been to a race. :D

Let's say sex = 100 (the best thing)

comforting a dying child is a whole different thing, which just happens to be (in my experience) better than sex.

But if sex = 100 then the comforting can't be more, so it must ipso facto =100.

therefore (triangle of dots) comforting a dying child = sex.

(Been there, it's one of Shang's TRUTHs.

This all reminds me of that game you play as a kid. "Me and partner know everything. Ask me any question, I know the answer."

"What's your favorite color?"
"Blue."
"How does sex relate to illness?"
"My partner knows that one."
"If sex = procreation, does that mean that gay people are evil like the Bible says?"

No. Tragedy. There's always tragedy. Great fucking heaping gobfuls of fucking tragedy. That's a given. That's the null condition. That's a given.

That's why the other - the helping people - is so so so important. And Everyone's responsibility, no matter what anyone says. We all stop fucking for that and help, or should.

Jesus Christ my heart is raw tonight.

Yes, there's always tragedy.

I suppose my point is that there are so many people, for whom sex is beyond them, for so many reasons.

Many hopes for healing of the heart.

Unless you like it raw.
