Or talk during sex.

I've had characters deliver way more thoughtful lines during sex than I ever managed. There's room for that, but I'm trying to avoid it right now. Aroused people usually don't have a lot of smart things to say. Higher thought processes shut down and all.

When do you think it's better for a character to say nothing than to say something stupid?

I agree with your take that people don't have deep thoughtful things to say during sex.

Sex is a primal act, dirty talk is one thing because its inspired by the act.

I will say that throwing in a line on occasion that's kind of silly and stupid works as in bad dirty talk or just bad lines.

But I keep serious lines for before or after the sex, personally I think after is better because the characters are relaxed and satisfied and can think more clearly.

Some mindless dirty talk could work in this case.

There are several phases of arousal during sex though - and one of them is interesting because the character is seriously aroused but still in control of their mental faculties. That's when they might say something interesting, I think.

That's when their arousal reveals something about them, exposes some desire or some thought that might usually be hidden. There's a kind of honesty that comes with being seriously aroused.

The polyamorous families I write run the gamut from the normal grunts and sighs from the physicality of passion to discussing the business of the day - and the business of their business - during moments of cuddling coitus. It's fun to listen into their banter, "Mikey, did you pay that invoice... ohgawd... yeah... like that. Mmmm." Next to them, "Shay, it's my turn. Don't use 'im up."

During sex!

Just kidding. Realistically, that's when people say some of the stupidest things.

Whether those things are better left unsaid is a matter of plot, not a matter of writing!

Writing exercise: Lean in to that. Make the stupid utterance have consequences.

I think it depends on the character, and he/she is the one you should ask :). Are they a compulsive talker? Likely they'll say something stupid as they lose focus on their words. If they're thoughtful, they may stay silent, or talk dirty for the effect. I don't think that for the reader it needs to be any particular way, and no way is wrong if it's what you (and the character) think should happen. I don't think they'll be asking about their lover's job promotion prospects, or who's going to look after the kids...

There's always the risk in saying something stupid that your partner is not at the same level of arousal, and there will be consequences.

One of these days I want to write a story where one partner quotes Kiss to the other: "No place for hiding, baby, no place to run; you pull the trigger of my love gun."

Seriously, it's not that far-fetched. In bed, depending on who the people are, they can say just about anything during the act. I've had encounters where my partner and I talked like actors in a cheap porno. And it was great.

Worst line I ever read was somebody trying to create tension in a Loving Wives story when the husband hears his wife say to her lover, "Fuck me in my married pussy on my marital bed." If I ever had a partner that said something like that to me in the middle of coitus, I wouldn't be able to stop laughing. And if they were serious, I would stop there and then and take their partner out for a drink before recommending a good lawyer and/or counselor.

Sex talk in my experience is one of three things should it occur: encouragement (yeah baby, just like that), control/submittal (harder! Whatever you say, babe), or speaking in tongues (Fucking A Jesus Christ sonuvabitch do that again and I'll rip your cock off when I come you sadistic mother fucking cock!).

Pillow talk can be revealing, especially when they author doesn't know what's about to be said. This little exchange revealed a lot about the characters:
I eased myself another inch in, my cock head completely inside her cunt now, the long shaft still visible. It's this slow penetration that I crave, denying me, denying her, torturing me, taunting her.

"Fuck," she said in a soft soft voice. "Fuck me, fuck Kate."

Even in her whisper, Kate's "k"s were precise, echoing the "f...uckk" like a castanet. "Fuck your Kate."

I stopped, surprised by the gift, granting me possession. I'd not expected that. Not so soon, anyway.

I leaned forward, my body over hers, to whisper in her ear, "I will, Kate, my Kate," to acknowledge the gift that she'd given me.

She smiled, and took my hand and clasped my fingers through with hers. "Got you," she murmured. "You can do what you want with me now."
