I couldn't agree more with all of that. England do have other attacking options - Gerrard running at defenders, Lampard and Scholes sniping from the edge of the box - but our mind-set is either to spring Owen on a run, or get a free-kick for Beckham. This two-trick pony has been sussed by every decent team, who deny Owen space behind them. It looks a worse and worse decision to have left Defoe behind, but it's actually even scarier just how thin the cover is in other places... I can't stand Gary Neville, but he played OK, and what other option was there? If not Beckham wide right, who? Still no left midfield... still no Shearer replacement...
