Emily Wolf was the kind of girl who would give the shirt off her back, she was very beautiful and rather talented. She had a way with animals, horses mostly and had the kind of stare that could make a man melt no matter what race they were. When Emily was only fifteen years old she ended up finding an elf in the forest that she lived in alone. He had been hurt by an arrow that was filled with a poison that was tailored to be deadly to Elves.

He was violently ill for a good week and had been asleep most of that week, she helped him. Her parents were dead but her mother taught her about how to help wounded and sick people, her mother knew much and she wished that she had her mother with her when she met the man. So she did the best that she could and saved his life, she found out who he was when she helped him get back since he was still much to weak to travel on foot.

So using her black horse beauty she saw his kingdom, and she figured that she would never see him again. But about a month later he came back and just about every day after that. Know at the age of eighteen she has grown rather fond of her friend, and really loved him. But because he was an elven king she never said anything, she knew it was possible for a human to live as long as elves they just had to go through a ritual or she would need to give him a child.

She decided now that she was eighteen to try and feel around to see how he felt about her, so taking Beauty and heading to the kingdom and everyone welcomed them. Since she was well respected for saving there king, she was humming a bit as she rode up to the castle as the stable boy took her horse. The door opened up and she smiled.

"Hello Sire..." She bowed, showing respect like she always did.

Karthas had been the king of Rivendale as long as he could remember. His father died very young and his mother and sisters were not fit for the throne. At the age of three sitting upon the throne was quite fun. His older sister and he constantly got to play in the throne room, running around and fighting with sticks and everything of the sort. His mother had basically run Rivendale, but on technicality it had assumed the throne. Honestly though, he didn't really ever feel an undying urge to fully take all that responsibility. Katarina, his mother, was loved by nearly everyone in the city, save for a few peasants. She made decisions to benefit the masses and keep the city thriving in all its glory.

His family owed everything to one girl though. A human girl, at that. Her name was Emily Wolf and she'd saved his life. Normally when people used the term 'saved my life,' it didn't hold quite as true as for his story. He'd been hunting alone very early one morning as he had the previous three. Sneaking through the trees, lighter on his feet than nearly any male elf his age he had no idea how they caught him or found his path but he was ambushed by one tall man in a black cloak. The first arrow whirred by his head and his ears picked up the sound of a man rustling the leaves and branches in a tree about twenty meters away. Another arrow flew by his side and he dashed into the trees. He knew he wasn't ever supposed to leave the castle walls without another person but nobody was nearly as nimble or light-footed as he was so they'd always scare this away. That's why Karthas always went in the early morning light before anyone was awake.

After leaping over a few fallen trees and peering behind him a few times he sat down with his back to his attacker, peering over the small rocky hill every now and again. His chest was rising and falling quite a bit more than usual. He may have just run for his life. As his breathing slowed and he relaxed a little bit, he felt the suns ray's baring down on him. It was getting a little late and he really needed to get back to the castle. With one last look over the rocky hill, he took off to his west and he'd just cut straight up on a different path, hopefully completely avoiding his attacker. As soon as he turned an sharp pain shot through his shoulder. The man had still been waiting. He dropped down from the tree and fired another. The poison in the arrow had obviously taken some effect and he couldn't dodge the second one either. Another hit. With an arrow in his shoulder and one in his thigh the pain forced him to the ground. The poison was coursing through his veins and he was quickly losing consciousness. Karthas' grey-blue eyes fell closed while his body lie on the forest floor.

He had no idea how long he was out. How long he was in the forest. How this girl found him. Or how she knew a cure to this poison. Karthas did know that he owed her his life though. She helped him back to Rivendale on the back of her horse and never asked for a thing in return. This girl was truly his guardian angel. He had to honor her in some way. Humans were not usually allowed to enter their town without a very good reason. Karthas gave her free reign to come and go as she pleased. A human certainly wasn't allowed to be near royalty, but he gave her that too. She was always welcome at their dinners and events. But he felt he owed her more. Not sure what more he could give her, he simply did his best to get out to her home and see her as often as he could. This may not have been a present in her eyes, but he risked his well-being doing it so it had to mean something.

Today was her day to come visit Rivendale so he waited patiently in the stables, talking to the stable boys that took care of the horses. With a familiar clip-clop he turned and looked towards Emily and Beauty. The stable boys rushed over and took Beauty, petting her, feeding her and making sure that she remained calm while they put her in a stable by herself on the far end of the building. Emily bowed and said her formal welcome.

"Come on now, you know better than that," he teased and embraced the girl in a hug. They'd grown quite fond of one another, or at least he had of her. Maybe she visited out of obligation to some moral code or something, but he liked to see her. Karthas was about the same height as the girl, maybe an few centimeters taller, but he was abnormally tall for an elf. He towered over his sister and mother, though his sister was the taller of the two. "Feels like it's been too long," as he let her out of the warm embrace. Though it had only been a couple days that was quite a while for them. He'd been forced to busy himself with the preparations for the hard winter they had coming and hadn't gotten out to see her in the last three days.

Emily smiled seeing her friend and knew that she had a lot to discuss with him, she had a feeling he had a lot of questions. About her knowledge on certain things, she had been doing a ton of thinking about him lately and knew she never explained herself. So she decided since she had become good close friends with him, to tell him things no one else knew about her. She wasn't an open book, Emily had been hurt before and right now she was just afraid of getting hurt. But she knew he never would do such a thing.

Karthas showed his true nature after he healed up, and knew she liked who he was. Right now everything was just so great right now. Looking into his eyes they were so beautiful, Elves was one of the most beautiful races she had ever seen. Her mother taught her a lot about different Races, not there culture of course because she didn't know it. But she explained the things she knew, like where they lived. How long they lived that sort of thing, and she had always wanted to meet one. And wished that they had met under better circumstances.

Since she almost lost him, and that would have killed her. He was everything to her and she needed to tell him everything she could think about. Taking a deep breath she felt his embrace and she wrapped her arms around him. Holding him so close, closing her eyes as she enjoyed the warmth of his body. The smell that he had, and when they finally pulled apart she smiled at the comment he made. "Perhaps I am better then that, but hey nothing wrong with respecting a friend. Or would you rather I have no respect for you?"

She said seriously but then began to laugh happily. And placed her hand on his shoulder "I know we have much to discuss Karthas, since I had been doing a lot of thinking about ever since we met. And the events that have followed after it, there are some things I should probably tell you about me. Since I get a feeling you have questions about things, just the way you look at me looks like you have questions." She said placing her hand on his back and patted it sweetly and looked at him with the eyes of a child, since they were full of curiosity.

"So how have you been my friend, I hope your sister and mother are well"

Questions, questions, and more questions. Karthas was young as far as elves were concerned. And he looked quite similar in age to the male's around Emily's age. "Emily, you know how curious I am. I could ask questions all day," he chuckled a little bit, feeling her hand pat the lower part of his back. Winter was nearing and the air was just starting to get a little bit of a bite to it. There was no need to stand around outside in the stable while a warm hearth waited for the two of them inside. Luckily there were tunnels and such that connected the castle to the stables. Karthas and his sister were the only one to really use them as peaceful times set down upon Rivendale. "Those two seem to keep themselves occupied," he spoke over his shoulder as he led his way to the tunnel in the floor of one of the empty stalls. "And I've been very busy this year, they say this will be one of the harshest winters in a long time. Orchestrating all the supplies and stuff has proven to be pretty tough." he laughed, but was seriously a little worried about this coming winter. It was early in the year and they'd had their first frost, and the nip in the air had come even earlier. The harvest this year hadn't been the best so he knew that if things lasted too long people would start getting upset over rations and such.

Karthas held the trap door up for Emily and followed her into the warmth of the torch-lit tunnel. They were few and far between but the torches had a very narrow and small space to light. "How about yourself?" he smiled, though she wasn't able to see it he assumed she could hear the enthusiasm in his voice. As they passed each torch it gave Karthas a good look at her back side. Even in their rather thick winter clothing he knew she had a nice figure, one that even the Elven girls seemed to envy. The girl lived in the woods and basically fended for herself. The only exception being when he brought food out there or she came to one of their dinners here. His mind was teeming with questions and he wanted to ask them all but patiently waited for her to answer the one he'd already asked. Luckily it was simple and with the way that Emily was, wouldn't really warrant a long response.

Karthas followed behind Emily for about two minutes and they soon found themselves in the living room of his chambers. The king's chambers were actually very large. It had it's own sitting room, reading nook with desk and of course the sleeping chambers with little more than a bed and a hearth in it. In his chambers it was even warmer than in the tunnel and he quickly shed the wolf pelt that he'd had over his shoulders. Karthas probably didn't really need the king's chambers, he was still very young and naive, in fact, he hadn't even lost his virginity yet. There was no need for having such a large bed, but his mother urged him to fill the spot. Now that he was officially in control, not just technically, he heeded his mother's council very often. She had told him that it was his job to sleep there now, and it was one of the safest places in the castle. Part of him thought that his mother couldn't bare the thought of sleeping in the bed that his father and her had slept in so many years ago, anymore.

Emily didn't know how she would deal with the winter, she knew that this winter was going to be a bad one. And she wouldn't be able to travel very much to see him, course with her house becoming run down she didn't know what to do. She was to proud to ask for a place to stay from Karthas but still she just couldn't bring herself to do it. Perhaps she was just foolish and stupid. But had a feeling she would be cornered in order to do it, she knew there crops were not as great as the years before.

"As for me I'm alright, kinda worried about the winter. Because I know it's suppose to be a rather hard one. I tried to stock up on food since eating for one I get by, but unfortunately my house is falling apart around my ears. One of these days it will probably cave in around me and that will be the end of it" She said rather sad about thinking about it. When they finally were able to sit down, she enjoyed the warmth of the room, crossing one leg over the other. Enjoying the company of her good friend.

Thinking about everything she looked at her friend and patted the spot beside her on the couch. She loved to spend time with him, she loved to be close to the man. He looked like he was around her age but knew he was much older. Even if he was only one hundred that was much older then her. Though older men turned her on. Smiling happily it was a rather wonderful moment, reaching over she placed her hand on his and squeezed it. "But hopefully it wont be a bad winter, since I wouldn't be able to travel a lot"

Karthas was busying himself with the fire in the hearth while she told him of her troubles. He knew he could offer her a place to stay, but with the supplies being low and the fact that she'd be the first human to live among them he held back his offer. He wanted to help his friend as best he could but as a king he had a responsibility to a group of people. Surely he'd go out hunting as often as he could. Hunting during the winter was his favorite. Just him and the elements, his bow and his arrows, and a bottle of water. After moving logs around in the fire and throwing a new one on he turned around to her patting the spot next to her.

Without a second thought he headed over and took a seat next to her on the sofa. her hand quickly met his own and he was a bit shocked. Her fingers were a little bit cold, but riding around this time of year did that. Too warm for gloves but too cold to ride bare-handed it seemed. He used his other hand to sandwich her chilly fingers between his warm palms and began to rub them together a little bit. "I'm sure I'll come out to see you after hunting," he chuckled lightly. She knew the entire story behind how he got shot with the arrows, well, everything up until he passed out that he could tell her. The man continued to rub her fingers while plotting his next hunting trip. Even though one had almost killed him he had to keep hunting, it was his favorite thing to do in his free time. Plus it could make a nice meal for his mother and sister or sometimes just Emily.

Once her first hand was warm he snatched up her other one and repeated the action. While rubbing her hands he simply gave her a warm smile. "I could help you fix it up if you'd like," he tried to offer an alternative. He knew he couldn't simply offer her a bed in the castle if he hand't asked his mother and sister first. Mostly his mother. Karthas was fairly handy, but there was no hiding the fact that he had a fairly easy upbringing. As some would say, he was 'born with a silver spoon in his mouth'. He hated that saying, but it was rather true. While he wasn't the best with fixing thing, he was fairly versed in sword fighting, but had yet had a chance to actually use it outside his lessons. Once her other hand was warm he sat politely next to her, bringing one hand back and leaving their hands together, fingers now laced together. How had that happened? Was it him? Was it her? was it a bad thing?

Emily smiled at her friend and heard what he said and thought "Normally I would swallow my pride and ask for some help, but I know that you have to think of your people first. It's not like your married to me" She said softly and showed him she respected his responsibility to his people first before her. She figured that if she froze to death she had nothing more to worry about it. Thinking of different things she just relaxed and closed her eyes for a second. Allowing her fast beating heart to relax a bit.

Though she did smile when he started to warm her hands for her, she didn't even know that her hands were cold. They felt warm to her, but when the hands started to get warmer she smiled as she squeezed his hands and looked at him. She did love him but because of the race thing she didn't know if a relationship with him was possible, she squeezed his hand showing she really did care for him. She wanted to just lean over and kiss him, but she was a virgin never had she been touched nor been kissed.

Emily's touch was something he cherished. She had a very loving feel about her, and she was extremely selfless. In the week after she'd found him and was nursing him back to health she often took care of him better than she took care of herself and he knew that she would need a place to stay this winter. If the predictions were correct they really had a problem on their hands, on the other side of the fence, if they weren't correct, then that was an entirely different story. The raven-haired girl next to him was magnificent, had a body that made him think things he'd never thought about a human girl before. In fact, before he met her, he'd have never even considered the idea of having one in his life.

The second that his mother noticed that Karthas and Emily were getting a little too close she found things for him to do around the castle, usually leaving Emily to talk to his sister, Arya. The girl was always around, in places that she knew she shouldn't be, not always causing trouble, but gossiping and learning all the gossip that there was buzzing about. Nothing ever seemed to catch his sister by surprise.

"I'm sorry Emily," he offered her a sincere apology. He simply didn't see a way things could work out but he would do his best to find one. If you didn't live in a city during the harsh winters things could get pretty rough for you. In the spring a group of guardsmen usually went around to all the homes outside the walls and checked to make sure the residents had made it. After particularly rough winters it was common to find people simply frozen to death in their homes. Karthas would not let this happen to Emily, even if he had to smuggle her into the palace. "What would you like to do today?" he inquired as his gentle gaze met her own.

Emily smiled and heard what he said and stroked his cheek "It's alright my friend, you have so much more to worry about then what happens to me" She kissed his cheek and stood up. Crossing her arms she looked outside and saw his mother and sister speaking, looking down she closed her eyes. She always got a sense they didn't like her, because she was human. But no one knew that she spoke Elfish as well. Thinking about everything that happened to them, she had a feeling it was time to perhaps show her worth to know there king.

A melody actually escaped her lips, as she sang one of there honored songs perfectly. Running her fingers against the window, her voice carried in the room where they were in and outside. She was looking for acceptance even being human she wasn't accepted here. Her grey eyes full of life and happiness that Karthas gave her, as she sang the elvish she thought of the translation with it, making her smile even more. She was a miracle in the form of a human, and smiled the whole time.

"Hahren na melana sahlin (Elder your time is come)
Emma ir abelas (Now I am filled with sorrow)
Souver'inan isala hamin (Weary eyes need resting)
Vhenan him dor'felas (Heart has become grey and slow)
In uthenera na revas (In waking sleep of freedom)

Vir sulahn'nehn (We sing, rejoice)
Vir dirthera (We tell the tales)
Vir samahl la numin (We laugh and cry)
Vir lath sa'vunin (We love one more day)
