Eroticism

Last night, for the first time, she looked at me. She looked at me. I was writing an email, timelines for the exhibition details and preparing of art spaces and the delivery of the pieces, et cet et cet, but I sensed the stillness in the room, as if the world stopped moving, and when I looked up, she was looking at me, at the strap of my bra, pastel blue, which had come into view as my dress clung to the edge of my right shoulder.

Her eyes stared, then at my shoulder, bare, and then, as if becoming aware of where they were, darted to my eyes, and the moment was broken.

The world began speaking again, and I adjusted my dress, and yet I had been seen.

All night, at home, I thought of bras and shoulders and thought of mine and what she would have seen, how she would have seen.

Have you truly looked at bras and how they wrap the skin?

So, I think there is a difference between Eroticism and pure sexuality. While the sexual can also be erotic, the erotic is often not necessarily sexual.
George Battaile said once that eroticism as thriving when it breaks prohibitions, goes beyond the physical, into something else, something we can’t express but feel. Perhaps, he is referring to o something similar to what the Romantics called the sublime.

So this thread is about the erotic, moving away from the sexual to something being it, something more sublime.

Hopefully we can work out what eroticism actually is.

Stunning, I have a cocktail dress with the back cut the same way

Such beautiful pictures and images in this thread. I think the power of eroticism lies in subtlety, the implied and indirect glimpses of sexuality. These images really capture that, and the stolen little moments that surprise you with sexual thoughts...

We've talked about the bobs, and I for one am partial to them, you may have noticed. But unruly, wild, exuberant hair can only be carried by a special woman. She embodies the vastness of Gaia, the raw ferocity of a Kali, the dark unreachability of an Isis. How can such polar axes converge in one being? yet, there are women who walk among us, who exude such grace, one would think they are the embodiments of Thomistic hylopmorphsm.

This made my brain hurt and my body bristle. It’s funny how I have met girls with wild hair, who are demure and sometimes wish they could have straighter, more tame hair, and other girls who have thin, straight hair, who are fierce and wish their hair could have more body.

It’s as if each is looking to the other and wishing they could have more of what they see. The way their inner substance sees the physicality of the other. *brain ache* But this clearly means that both are desirable, if only each could see it about themself. But for many, the irrational, distorting filter that we look through, when we look at ourself, can be so different to what others see.

The woman who walks among us that you speak of is so desired and yet so out of reach from those of us who are mere mortals. How could we ever deserve to have such beauty! But perhaps it is the elusiveness that makes it all so erotic; that inbetween, liminal, peripheral space that we return to so often. I feel that if everything we desire was within our reach, the erotic would perish.

Oh yes, yes, YES! This sounds so exciting!!! To just imagine how she saw you in that moment! Being noticed... seen... imagined about (in that moment... or later! ☺️). Thanks for sharing it.

Ok, this might require quite a few photos… but I think it would be good to revisit the eroticism of the female musician. I know, I have kind of been here before, but I think I’d like to list *some* of my favourites (it could honestly be a HUGE list!)

1. Debbie Harry, because… well… I was a teenage boy once! She’s an icon and oh, so erotic!
IMG_0395.jpeg

2. Dua Lipa, because I don’t just admire her body, but she is so intelligent… and I find that much more attractive

3. Marianne Faithful, because “Why D’ya Do It?”. Uh!
IMG_0397.jpeg

4. Poppy Ackroyd, because her music stirs me so much!
IMG_0400.jpeg

5. Marianne Crebassa, because of her voice, and for her sophistication. Pop over to YouTube and watch her sing Duo des Fluers with Sabine Devieilhe, and you’ll see what I mean
IMG_0418.jpeg

6. Sonah Jobarteh, because she is strikingly talented, and the fact that she is such a pioneer. She has such beauty when she plays!
IMG_0406.jpeg

7. Imelda May, because she’s an inner city Dublin girl, who knows her sh*t, loves her family and sings her heart out. When I watched her live, I was totally in awe of her voice and her charisma, and the dancing was fine!

8. Sophie Alloway, because I’ve never seen a percussionist play such complex rhythms whilst staying so calm… and because when she smiles (which she always does when she plays) it’s so infectious!
IMG_0407.jpeg

9. Lola Young, because she tells it how it is! The world needs her. Watch her sing the “Messy” (live for Like a Version) recorded at triplej studios. She’s the real deal, pure authenticity.

10. Bjork, just because I’m in love with artists… and she is truly an artist.

I’m only allowed ten attached images!

11. Nataly Dawn (Pomplamoose), because… Look… just go to the Pomplamoose YouTube channel and fall in love. Honestly, her voice is gorgeous and the way she expresses and moves when she sings will give you delight! Yum!

12. Sina Doering. I am a percussionist. I love female percussionists. Sina is ridiculously talented and the way she gets lost in the rhythms, and how she moves when she plays makes me want to watch her play forever!

There are more, but I won’t go further so i don’t labour it. I can’t really put into words how much I adore experiencing female musicality. Does it belong in a thread about eroticism? I think so, yes. This is not just admiration… the thought of being in the company of such artistry, talent, sensitivity and emotional intelligence makes me feel something tangible, somehow… and the erotic is certainly this elusive desire.

Finally, my number one is Hania Rani. When I watched the recording of her live performance at Invalides, Paris, my heart completely melted. She is possibly one of the most beautiful people on Earth in my humble opinion. Erotic! OMG yes! YES! The way she touches the piano. The way she sings. Her movement… the way she physically engages with the music! The way she stays in contact with her band. The way she goes into a state of flow when she is in the music… so in the present moment, bringing us along with her! The sophistication of it. The sheer beauty of her music! The feeling that she puts into it. The technical skill. I’m gushing, aren’t I? Yeah… She’s special.

If you want an instant hit of what I’m talking about, head straight to her performance of “Buka” at 32 mins in, watch her get lost in it, smiling, having a joyous, beautiful moment right in front of us. And watch through Ghosts which comes afterwards. You see? Do you see what I see? *sigh*

Long post, eh? Sorry! (not sorry)

Eroticism and its suggestiveness pulls me, attracts me more than the revelation. The moment before is most alluring because it reeks of possibility. The moment after is mere certainty.

Eroticism by its very nature is suggestive, lacking manifest clarity for the unperceptive. Eroticism demands a slow-down critical view.

Therefore, at first blush, that potentiality will always be greater than "mere certainty' (i.e., fruition) since the mind accepts Possibility, which is often more than the realization.

Nice, critical thoughts, softbird.

Eroticism is a gorgeous dance! It's momentary, it's ephemeral .... miss it and it's gone ... but be watchful because something like it, may return (as with these words and your images)
