What better way to get her to grab onto your saddle horn?

You’ve seen it in the westerns: The fair maiden is about to be ravished by bloodthirsty Injuns when the hero thunders in on horseback and scoops her up just before she gets poked with more arrows than General Custer. So how does a guy pull it off? Maxim explains, with a helping hand from professional stunt rider Will Haines.

Step 1: Prepare your mount
You’ll need a horse and a saddle with stirrups strapped on tight so you won’t go overboard when you yank your lady up. It’ll help if your damsel in distress is accustomed to a rough ride: She’s going to end up on the back of the horse, bareback behind the saddle, humping a half-ton stallion moving at 25 miles per hour.

Step 2: Hi-yo, Silver
Kick the beast—that’s the horse—into a gallop and hold on tight. Your girl is going to use the horse’s momentum to swing up behind you. The faster you go, the more swing she’ll get. As agreed before you started this fiasco, she’ll be facing you, with her right arm out. Aim just to the left of her, and put the reins in your left hand and your right arm out, slightly bent. As you approach lean down to the right, toward her, while keeping both feet in the stirrups. Smile like everything’s under control.

Step 3: Pick her up
Link arms and watch the momentum swing her off her feet. As she turns her body to face forward, she’ll have to throw her left leg over the back of the horse, grabbing the back of the saddle with her left hand to help her up.

Step 4: Now you can get off
Once she disengages her right arm from yours, haul yourself back into an upright position, using the inside of your left thigh to press against the horse for leverage. At this point her arms should slip appreciatively around your waist, where she’ll need to get herself a grip. If she doesn’t she’s probably parked on her ass 30 yards back, with a tomahawk embedded in her skull. Either way it’s time to head for the nearest saloon.
