Equality and STEM

The only point I made was about your abject ignorance followed by your condescending know-it-all attitude...

;) ;)

... without doing a lick of research because, like pornography, you know it when you see it. I just handed you the rope sweetie, you tied the noose.

I actually read up on him extensively a while back. As I explained in a post further up, that's been subsequently over-written by stuff that I actually need to be thinking about at the moment, because his 'man up' crap isn't useful 'information' to retain.

You suggested I was making uninformed assessments of his work - actually, they are totally informed.
You suggested I was making ad hominem attacks - actually, my comments were totally based on his work and ideas, not him as a person (although he clearly is a twat).

But carry on thinking I'm 'not qualified' to comment on this stuff. I'm not entirely sure why you are - because you have a penis or because you're old?

Summon them and they will come.

Like a late-night bratwurst and sauerkraut feast...

Um ... Bell's comment was suggested the OP about women in STEM would provoke a huge tirade ... the last few pages of discussion have actually been about Jordan Peterson, who's work can apparently been summarised in a few pithy memes laid over shots of him looking meaningfully into the distance ... sigh.

When their vaunted tenure bites them on the ass.

Won't be long before the Canadians force him to the USA.

Silicon valley is about to get all it's beloved regulations and equality shoved up it's ass in the courts too....god it's going to be great to eat their own medicine and watch the government stick a gun to their head and tell them how to run their companies.

The Europeans are already arresting and prosecuting comedians and artist for being politically incorrect.

The west won economically but we got fucking wrecked in the culture war....a far greater loss than the money.

Who's Peterson?

Which bit of him is controversial - that he's Canadian or that he's a professor?

Just 'men', or particular kinds of men?

I going to take a punt and say that Peterson is suggesting that young men should be conforming to relatively traditional models of hegemonic masculinity, and little else - that seems to be a common death rattle these days. He didn't write that dumb-arse '10 Rules to Live By' or whatever it was called, did he?

Um ... where was I trying to 'sound erudite' about Peterson? I took at a stab at what he was probably writing about, based on pretty much nothing more than what you've said, a historical knowledge of the type of 'intellectuals' you're likely to be attracted to, and and reasonable understanding of the 'men need to be men' backlash rhetoric that's circulating at the moment.

Trust me, if I wanted to sound erudite, I could do a much better job at it than that.

See here: "I going to take a punt and say that Peterson is suggesting that young men should be conforming to relatively traditional models of hegemonic masculinity, and little else - that seems to be a common death rattle these days. He didn't write that dumb-arse '10 Rules to Live By' or whatever it was called, did he?" ... where quite clearly I actually do know who he is.

And somehow.........

Fuck me, you can't make this stuff up!

Christ, you lot really struggle with reading comprehension. "As I explained in a post further up, that's [i.e. my prior reading up on Peterson] been subsequently over-written by stuff that I actually need to be thinking about at the moment, because his 'man up' crap isn't useful 'information' to retain."

I've read a LOT in the last 30 years. It's impossible to retain the names of every single author or theorist I've ever read. I tend to focus on remembering the ones who are actually useful, but even then I'm more likely to remember the theory than the name of theorist. Everything I wrote, both before I remembered who Peterson actually is, and afterwards, is totally on point in relation to his work, and generalised whinging from a subgroup of white men at the moment.

But sure, if dismissing me because it took me ten minutes to remember who some irrelevant 'intellectual' is rocks your world, go for it.

BTW, Peterson's book is called 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos.

Outline of the book:[4]

1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back
2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
3. Make friends with people who want the best for you
4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today
5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them
6. Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world
7. Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)
8. Tell the truth – or, at least, don't lie
9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't
10. Be precise in your speech
11. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding
12. Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street

C'mon, Jordan, cats are evil little fiends. Don't encourage them.

And #6 sets way too high a bar. Our FFs didn't make sure of that before they mounted a revolution.

Yeah, not exactly searing intellectual insights, is it. (Although I'm totally down with #12 ... my spawn actually takes photos of them in case they get lost later on and the owner needs a recent photo for their 'lost cat' poster. Yes, there's a bit of a logic flaw in there, but it's pretty adorable.)

I'm aware that his work actually extends beyond these 12 bits of common sense (something which should NEVER be mistaken for actual research) - it's the surrounding twaddle that I actually find more problematic. But that's the case with a lot of self-styled 'public intellectuals' at the moment - Molyneux would be another case in point.

Ohhhh add racism to the man hating. Typical. :D

Because anyone who buys into the concept of personal responsibility must be a white male!!!

Like Candice Owens...

Noted Peterson fan/friends and white male misogynist.

Newsflash cupcake....they (people who realize there is at least some value in taking personal responsibility for their lives) are far from all being white, or even men.

The subgroup of white men are all white, and all men. There might be other subgroups engaged in similar whinging ... I've yet to encounter them (with the exception of Lauren Southern, although she's borderline incoherent and just happens to have good marketing ... I really wouldn't call her even a self-styled 'public intellectual').

Yes we got your racism/sexism the first time around.

Might? And there is the confirmation on the bigotry.

You living in your echo chamber of hatred against white males doesn't make everyone to the right of the equity loon socialist on the left a white male.

Everything in her world seems to be made up of NOT "toxic masculinity" and "TOXIC Masculinity", especially the white kind. Which is everyone who disagrees with her regardless of race or sex.

The people that are the most rabid in their denunciation of Peterson are those that have never actually listened to his lectures. Peterson is as classical liberal as you can get. It's the fact that he readily destroys their cherished beliefs that drives them nuts.

Myth: Peterson obtained notoriety for being 'transphobic.'

Fact: Peterson obtained notoriety for refusing to allow government to mandate 'acceptable' speech under law.

Meanwhile, in reality, academics don't give a fuck about Peterson because he's hardly original, and makes no meaningful contribution.

Dershowitz is getting the same treatment. He's a lifelong liberal and yet, because he wrote a book outlining how the whole Russia thing/Mueller probe is unjustified, he gets death threats from the Lefty Lunatics.

That’s funny, you keep digging that hole.

I actually read up on him extensively a while back.

Yeah but bearing in mind 12 Rules was only published on 23rd Jan 2018 and he didn’t really come to prominence until later that year, not 30 years ago, you’d have to be extraordinarily forgetfully of your “extensive” reading of him.

Woof!

Being cited 8000 times is pretty impressive.

Peterson's areas of study and research are in the fields of psychopharmacology, abnormal, neuro, clinical, personality, social, industrial and organizational,[1] religious, ideological,[2] political, and creativity psychology.[3] Peterson has authored or co-authored more than a hundred academic papers[27] and has been cited almost 8,000 times as of mid-2017. You said that twice in this thread. Meanwhile Peterson is selling books by the

millions which means people, and not just men, are interested in what he has to

say. Keep on open mind, you might learn something. Simple as that.

Justin Bieber sells more records than the London Philharmonic. Twilight outsold Moby Dick.

Actually closer to 11k as of today.

What I'm saying is, there's a difference between popular audience, and professional audience. Peterson used to publish mainstream topics in academic journals, and wrote a generally well received book in psychology. But that was almost two decades ago.

Not nearly as many have read academic literature, though.

Not everything in the book I agree with either, but worth the read.
