Equality and STEM

We have? I hadn't heard that. Are there studies showing that men are actively being discouraged from entering STEM fields?

Good lord, that would be stupid.

It is not only of particular interest, if it's true then the goal of any reasonable person has been met. No discouragement and freedom to choose. Let's declare success and be happy.

It's very much like a lie of omission.

We're trying to do everything we can to encourage girls (and that in now way can discourage the boys of the campus rape culture).

Men, (who, as a group, show a stronger aptitude towards those fields) are actively discouraged from even getting into college. Look at admission rates. Look at admission rates into graduate schools.

As the rate of men being admitted to college vs women inverted, the rate of Americans in STEM fields declined. This was not a coincidence. I am regularly out around Arizona State University in Tempe. When you see men on the sidewalks of that particular University which is now the largest in the country you see very few white male faces. You see white women and men who see likely to be foreign students. I suppose that all of the blonde women there might be Scandinavian exchange students but I tend to doubt it. However large numbers of Chinese and Pakistani students. ASU has a good reputation in the stem fields. It isn't being filled with locals.

Arizona has a public university system that specifically by our constitution is required to have tuition be held to the lowest possible level for residents. They get around that by having massive numbers of students from out of state and out of the country and what few locals they do have are there on Pell Grant so they get to pretend that the exorbitant tuition is reasonable because it goes by the average actually paid tuition. It's pretty unconscionable actually.

Nevermind the culture that actively blames white men for the failure to thrive of everyone else on the planet making it socially irritating to put up with the academic industrial complex.

So this searing theoretical insight is based on you wandering around a college campus every now and then?

And this is interesting: "Look at admission rates. Look at admission rates into graduate schools." ... so if women are staying out of STEM in droves, that because of 'aptitude' or 'personal preference', but if men are (apparently) not enrolling in higher education, that's because of 'discrimination'.
Maybe they just finally realised they'd make more money training as plumbers and electricians.

Fuck off.

Or maybe the study authors, like most researchers, don't give a fuck about Peterson. Seriously, in my experience, most folks in academia don't give two shits about him, if they even know who he is.

i have friend on fb who insists on pasting peterson's drivel instead of engaging in an adult conversation.

Do your homework...

What Que said.

Que's comment has history that has nothing to do with you.

I going to take a punt and say that Peterson is suggesting that young men should be conforming to relatively traditional models of hegemonic masculinity, and little else - that seems to be a common death rattle these days. He didn't write that dumb-arse '10 Rules to Live By' or whatever it was called, did he?

Sending feminist, leftist and academics alike into apoplectic fits across the western world.:D

Indeed, which is why we got such a pejorative and hateful response from one of the board's more indoctrinated in SJ orthodoxy. More will follow. We already see the skittishness produced by the idea that masculinity has been heralded as having no place in academia.

We NEVER said that!

Some stupid bitch's Google-foo returned predictable results. What do you expect of someone who has only prospered in life from the privileges afforded her as a white woman? Can't very well expect her to work for it, can you?

Just can't stop yourself getting personal, can you?

In other words, you are perfectly comfortable trying to sound erudite on a topic you know nothing of and have deigned not to look into, because you already have the crib notes of the Progressive playbook.

I have no time for that type of ignorance.

It doesn't even rise the the level of the willful ignorance of the person who has watched the movie adaption of The Fall of the Roman Empire waxing eloquent on the topic of Gibbons' writing and research.

Um ... where was I trying to 'sound erudite' about Peterson? I took at a stab at what he was probably writing about, based on pretty much nothing more than what you've said, a historical knowledge of the type of 'intellectuals' you're likely to be attracted to, and and reasonable understanding of the 'men need to be men' backlash rhetoric that's circulating at the moment.

Trust me, if I wanted to sound erudite, I could do a much better job at it than that.

Reminds me of something Dr. Dae Shik Kim wrote [paraphrasing].

If you are a Christian and are weak, then turning the other cheek is the only thing you can do, but if you know the way of the true warrior and you turn the other cheek, it is because you chose to, and that is a noble and moral act.

What they glossed right over as if it's not relevant is that on an objective basis even in countries where women are doing well in STEM fields because they need to they still on average have less aptitude.

Is that in the study?
