how come a lot of times I will post a reply to someone and when it shows up on the thread it comes up BEFORE the post I am replying to. What causes that? Am I doing something wrong? Can I stop it???

Good Question!!!

I don't have an answer, but yes, it has happened to me too and it can be confusing on the word threads

very confusing

not that I'm that hard to confuse or anything

Another question

Why do some peoples PM's pop a message up on my screen telling me I have a new PM and others I have to be told that they sent one?

Oh Weird Harold, we need answers

i hate when that happens

i don't know why either but i do know it leaves me
Unusuallyconfused!!

(sorry UC, i couldn't refuse)

The out of order posts, I think are because they're too close together -- timestamped within the same minute. At least it's the only time I've seen it happen.

I don't have any answers about why some PM's trigger an alert, others don't trigger an alert, and somthing triggers alerts when there aren't any new messages

Could the persons Time offset be wrong or the posting program not calculating the times correctly?

I don't know -- I just know it is really unnerving to read a post, answer it, and then find my post first on the thread -- doesn't make sense. I can understand two people posting simultaneously but I am talking about being put on ahead of a post that is already on the thread

I know it's confusing when I post something to only find it under what I was replying to or to find someone posted at the exact same time it's weird.

The pm thing as well I've had some bring a you have a new pm then other's that haven't it's strange I guess but sometimes that happens.

it hasnt happened to me in forever. Wierd Harolds right though i believe.

on the other board im a reg at. when others make a reply at the exact same moment. it makes another thread with that reply. and instead of the persons handle is says the time and where the sub should be it says the date. lol so its all screwed up!

wierd things happen when posts happen at the same time. Its like a sign of doom or hilarioty. im not sure which. hehe.

just a thought

If the message is available for Diana to read then reply to, but her reply then appears before the original message in the thread, the problem is not time stamping (even within the same minute) or simultaneous posting.

Laurel may know for sure why this happens, this is only a guess.

If the BB is using more than one server (which is common on high traffic boards), or if the server is holding recent messages in more than one buffer or in virtual RAM, this problem could occur. If the posts are transfered into a BB database some time after they are received, but are available for a short time (seconds to a few minutes) from the server's buffer or virtual RAM, then the sequencing of the messages could easily be messed up.

From time to time, when traffic is heavy on Yahoo Club sites, the server buffers will make messages available without transfering them to the database, for up to twenty minutes. This is the reason that on a Yahoo Club, messages may be available from the club's "home" page, but not visible in the list of messages.

There is a much better explanation of this in a club for Founders of Yahoo Clubs.

Now, I'll wait for a real computer person to give a better explanation.

Can you explain why I keep getting sent back to the first 40 messages in Yahoo Clubs???? Annoying as hell.

You're right... it's annoying as hell.

It happens from time to time in all the clubs. I am the founder of three active clubs. I once read a technical explanation as to why this happens, but in a nutshell, it happens either when the servers are too busy to update the message database, OR when Yahoo is doing something with the databases. Yahoo says that they periodically run "word filters" on the message databases, and during these times, there will be glitches in how message databases are updated. They claim that the filters are not of a sexual nature, but rather looking for key word combinations like "kill myself".

Recently, Yahoo Clubs and Chat have been very slow. People keep getting booted out of chat. Yahoo hasn't admitted it, but most people think they are overloaded, and don't have the revenue to expand their server structure. Up till the tech stock dive, Yahoo was always announcing how much they were expanding their infrastructure. Since the dive, they haven't been talking about expansion.

In the user CP under 'Edit Options' go to the 'Messaging & Notification' section, and look for 'Pop up a box when you receive a Private Message?' and there you go.

Yup Diana it is a pain and really weird to find the answer to a post show up before the question that you read and are answering

That is turned on. The big question, is why it doesn't work all of the time, or sometimes sends alerts for messages that don't exist.

If what you say is true about the buffer then I should think time stamping could be an issue. (Provided they are taking the time from the client and not the server.) If the time stamp is given to the message by the server I dont see how this could happen at all. But I default to your theory otherwise!

Tiger, that makes sense except for one thing. The server NEVER takes a time stamp from a client. If the server accepted the client's time stamp, time zones would screw up the whole system. Also, the clock on my computer is always loosing a little time. After a week or so, my computer's clock is about 5 minutes behind the REAL time. But my messages are always posted according to the time on the server.
