Endless Ends

This sectional reading adventure with Jenny seems to be working. I think my ability to read is rebooting!

Murderbot continues to rule.

I have segued to the first full length novel. *fingers crossed*

I  Murderbot.

They even have merch with the above. I am going to procure a sweatshirt. Which is the kind of thing you couldn't normally pay me to wear, but it's

MURDERBOT

Aaaaaand, if short stories involving a vampiric judge catches the fancy, this is quite amusing. Cute, fun, and the humor is quite dry.

Judge Dee and the Three Deaths of Count Werdenfels

There's an earlier story as well, titled: Judge Dee and the Limits of the Law
Those sound fun! I might actually try them to change things up. I think I'm getting bogged down in the whole historical fiction genre.

Your pipes are not that wimpy! I'm the one who needs to worry - Tuesday a.m. it will be around 2 degrees here. Not that cold by "up north" standards, but our houses here are not built to take it.

Yikes! Don’t let your pipes freeze. That happened to me once—all new plumbing needed, five days without water in Feb. not to mention the expense. Not fun.

Well, I've done everything I can (hence the hay), but considering we're talking pier and beam on a centenarian dwelling and single digit temps….

Single digit temps.

I feel like I need to say that again, just to….idk, something.

Seriously, though, lowest temps in a hundred years. There is ice rain belting my windows. Ice rain.

(Ice rain. That would be sleet, right? :p)

Ooooohhh, THAT house. OK. Carry on.

Ice rain, in my book, equals sleet.

They totally are! Light reading, they move fast, and are super enjoyable. I haven't read anything I enjoyed as much in that vein for some time. :cattail:

Yeah….

I fear….I fear I will be crawling under the house in the near future.. 😂

Holy Cats! The electricity is out and there is snow everywhere!

So much for overdosing over bad sci-fi movies.

Probably bad for me anyway. :p

*runs to get more blankets*

No power. No water. No hope of either until at least Wednesday, according to the electricity gods.

Also no phone. Until I realized I could charge via the car.

(Because, you know, I'm an idiot.)

Jenny, I think we might just need to push book club back tho the end of the week. 😂

I'm thinking more like next week. Just take care of yourself.

You too! I have on like five layers of clothes. I am also sorta regretting all these windows. 😂

The good news is you'll probably never have to go through this again. If you do, you'll have modernized things by then and hopefully have a generator

Eight degrees. Eight. Flipping. Degrees.

Things I have learned:

*cracks knuckles*

-It is possible to sleep in 2 pairs of gloves (one fingerless).
-It is possible to sleep n 3 pairs of socks (ankle, knee high, and mid thigh).
-Climbing over an icy gate (lock frozen) is most definitely hazardous to your health.
-Aquatalias are snow proof as well as water proof.
-Insisting a small dog wear not only his own, but one of my sweaters, is...not as easy as you'd think. 😳

That is all.

I want power. And water.

AND FOR THE TEMP TO GET ABOVE FREEZING

Frick. Is the world EVER going to return to some semblance of normal? Wasn’t 2020 enough? 😂

Have you thought about going to a motel?

No, I had not. Great idea, but I'm pretty the grid for the entire area was down.

I hope you still have power. Tomorrow is supposed to be better, marginally, at least down here. Take care. :rose:

If you do, don’t let them give you Cabin #1. And if they do, keep your eye on the painting of Susanna and the Elders. ;)

*taps foot*

Reference, sir?

(I googled the catch phrases with film but came up with nothing. :p)

Let us know you're all right, missy! I'm worried about you.

Although this is based on nothing, I bet Enny is a survivor type. I feel confident that she can start a fire using natural materials and has some form of water purification device. I don’t see her as a Doomsday Prepper person, but I bet she would fair better than many. :)

But yeah, let us know . . .

Sorry!! Just…so much.

Back home in Houston last night. Both power and water kicked on sometime midday and are still on this morning. Halle-freaking-lujah.

(This purchase may have to come under review, Jenny. I’m not sure I have the chops for rural living, i.e. pastoral hell.)

What’s happening in Dallas? Do you have power? Water? Boil order? Is Lolly okay?

Indeed, I do have a water purification device.

It’s called a distiller and requires electricity….

And that about sums up the depth of my phenomenal city-girl survival skills.

#needsacourse

(Though I appreciate the vote of confidence!)

<pic snip>

You sound mad, but that’s okay—we all go a little mad sometimes. :D

Psycho!! I hear it’s possible to see that as a child and be so terrified one is unable to watch it again.

I mean.

I hear. 😳

I'm glad you made it home in one piece and didn't turn into an icicle. I couldn't imagine being out there in all this all alone. It may be good that this happened at this point, before you have put too much into it and reached the point of no return if you do change your mind.

I've made it through unscathed so far, somehow. I live near a cluster of hospitals, so I think the policy was not to take those areas' power down. We'll see if I can make it without any broken pipes; still have the faucets going until we're totally through any freezing temps. Lolly is okay, but they've had no power for several days, at least as of yesterday.

*snippies*

I had always had a visceral reaction, a moment of terror whenever I would see a skeleton or skull or mummy for some reason. I saw Psycho the first time (I thought) in my 20s, and when the image of Mama's lovely face appeared on the screen, I had that same reaction only much stronger. I told my mom about it, and it turns out she and my dad had taken me with them when they went to see it at the theater when I was little. She kept me on her lap facing away from the screen, but I happened to turn around at that precise moment. She said my reaction was just to say "Mommy, her face is dirty!" But apparently it had a lot more effect on me! (P.S. I no longer have that reaction. :))

2021 is def turning into a “hold my beer, 2020,” kind of year.

2020 was hell. In 2021, hell froze over.

Sounds like you're most fortunately placed! I have a friend in Austin in a similar situation. They did eventually lose water, once that main water line cracked. Their area is still without water with no end in sight. It's hard to mind boiling water with that as an alternative.

I'm heading out tomorrow to check on the state of rural piping.

I am preparing myself for the worst….

Oh! Oh! This reminds me of an incident when I was about six. I was watching tv with my great-great-grandmother. An old black and white that started out innocuously enough. A barmaid was in her room changing. As she pulled her dress over her head the camera cut the just opened closet. Amongst the hanging clothes, a pair of wide scary eyes stared out.

At exactly the same time my ggg pulled her sweater over head.

Visceral would be the nature of my reaction. I jumped off the bed and ran screaming down the hall to the room my great-grandmother. Much chaos ensued.

Years later - and I mean decades - while watching late night Saturday tv

THE SAME SCENE FLASHED ON THE SCREEN

I'd never known the title, and somehow had never stumbled across it again. Until then.

I just about peed myself.

Frick. 😂

The Spiral Staircase (1946), by the way, based on an Ethel Lina White novel.
