Endless Ends

I just found out that I can buy a 16 foot inflatable movie screen and video projector for only a few hundred dollars! I thought those things cost waaway more than that.

I’m thinking movie night in hotwords’ backyard.

Inflatable movie screen? I've never heard of such a thing.

Wait.

Can we screen bad horror movies?!?!?!?

I. Am. So. Excited.

*bounces*

(That would actually be so fun! Trekka and I could fight over the popcorn. :p)

Inflatable screens are made for bad cinema! Doesn't your town, library, school do movies in the park? I thought that was a thing everywhere.

But Creature from the Black Lagoon is actually a really great movie. I love that one and it's sequel. The third one, not so much. And when he is swimming under her, admiring her, that is a beautiful scene. I want to see it in it's original 3D.

I. THAT. SCENE.

So surreal and lovely. I’ve never seen the sequel, or the third entry. It was originally in 3D?! I would so pay to seeeeeeee.

The creature costume has never not been absolutely amazing.

Agreed. Designed by Millicent Patrick. I just found out there is a book about her called Lady From the Black Lagoon.

I may have to order that one.

ETA: Never mind, I just read the reviews and it looks like the book sucks. Oh well. Millicent will remain a mystery. More fun that way.

Interesting story, though. Awful that not only did her work get stolen, but she was pushed out of the business as well.

She should be recognized for creating one of the best Creatures (using that term generically) in Monster Movie history.

Bud Westmore (make-up dude) was known for taking credit for other people's work.

Recent horror movies. Ooh, boy.

Revenge of the Creature. (1955)

Eh.

It definitely did not have the flare on the first movie. Aside from another underwater swim mirroring scene, it was…pretty forgettable. I’m not a big fan of *abduct the monster and take it to civilization* plots, so that might have been a factor. My sympathies are always with the monster. :p

About the usual amount of misogyny for the time. When the lone, spectacularly hot, women scientist laments having to make a choice between love or career, the object of her affections replies with: I’m a man. I don’t have to make a choice.

Subferatu. (2020)

By all rights this should have been awesome! I mean, come on, it’s billed as: “The greatest Comedy-Vampire-Submarine-Nazi-Horror film ever made.”

To top off my expectations, a quote flashed on screen as the movie began. “How do vampires travel across the sea? In blood vessels.”

I settled in, prepared for no less than EPICness.

I got no words.

On of the few movies I could not force myself to sit through. I made about 20 minutes before fast forwarding to the end.It was god awful, and surprising short on vampires. And actors. Who could actually act.

*two thumbs down*

The Attack of the Mushroom People. (1963)

(Otherwise knows as Matango.)

This bad boy was weirdly good. Also weirdly, about halfway through I realized I’d seen it before as a child. And that it has scared the bejeezus out of me! (The ending still might’ve, this time around.)

Crazy misogyny in this movie, and it’s nearly ten years newer than The Creature! Just a few of the little gems tossed out:

- “If you threaten a girl, then pretend to sympathetic yo her, she’ll fall for you immediately.”

- “Women are bad luck on ships. Because the men start to lose their heads.” (Ravening beasts that men are. :p)

- One of the men try to sneak into the women’s cabin at night. Uninvited.

- The same guy as above, publicly announces his intention to rape one of the women that night, because - and I’m not kidding - all their problems, being shipwrecked and all, are the fault of the women. FOR BEING ON THE SHIP.

- Oh, yeah, and in the above, none of the other men argue with this view.

Aside from all that, definitely worth a watch.

Any of you guys have Shudder? Its got a pretty decent selection. Plus The Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs is pretty phenomenal.

I haven't heard of either of those.

*googles*

Huh. I fear Shudder would be a most dangerous rabbit hole for me. Parked on the couch, perusing bad sci-fi 24/7 might not be the absolute best use of my time? Idk. Debatable, at this point. Though, I will admit a curiosity to The Last Drive in with Joe Bob Briggs. It looks to be reminiscent of MST3K, which…….I might've spent far too many hours parked on the couch perusing. :p

JEEEEEEENNYYYYYYY!

Just so you know, I am picturing you as one of those sexy, voluptuous, Everyday witches.

(Hotword's is one of those buff, Conan-style wizards and NRJ a laid-back Shaman.)

I don't know what an Everyday witch is, but if she's sexy and voluptuous, I'll take it!

Halloween! So naturally I've been watching horror movies.

This year’s selection focuses on movies I haven’t seen before, or, that being a rarified group, ones I haven’t seen in some time.

(I should probably clarify here that I prefer a low gore quotient.)

It’s been interesting to see how differently movies hold up to age. Wolfen and The Howling were both release in 1981. There was a lot of what was no doubt high-tech at the time in Wolfen, whiiiiich...did not do it any favors. The Howling, on the other hand, comes across, at least to me, as significantly less dated.

Too, Wolfen just didn’t seem to have the same suspense. That beginning in The Howling, where the reporter is meeting the serial killer in the sex video place? *big big eyes*

I’m planning on doing little but sitting on my derriere today, so TWO movies. Maybe. Even. Three. :p

First up, Mark of the Vampire (1935).

Which is thought to be a remake of the silent film London After Midnight. I cannot remember if I have seen this one or not, but Lionel Barrymore, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill!

*squeals*

Woohooo! I have 3 movies recorded to watch this weekend - The House That Dripped Blood, House of Wax, and Hound of the Baskervilles. I've already watched The House on Haunted Hill. Apparently houses are very important in the Halloween horror genre!

I am quite disgruntled about one thing - the Charlie Brown specials won't be on network TV anymore. Apple bought the rights, so you can only see it streaming. I have the DVDs, but it's just not the same as watching it the traditional way.

I'm not sure f I've seen The House That Dripped Blood, but the other two get two thumbs up!

Houses are absolutely an integral part of the spooky. *nods vigorously*

I found that distressing. Not that I’ve watched the Charlie Brown specials in years, but to put them on a pay service just seems wrong. I feel they should be available to ALL children, not just those with access to one particular streaming service. :(
