Endless Ends

Wow. I remember, couple decades back, reading something that average height in the US for women was 5'5" - which placed me marginally tall.

Current in US:
Women: 5'3.5"
Men: 5'9"

I'm not sure if the original article was on point or some offbeat stats, but it turns out height in the US is, indeed, declining! Not only here, but in a couple of other what they called developed countries.

A variety of factors, naturally, but childhood obesity has been strongly linked. It seems obesity causes the growth plates to close earlier resulting in shorter adults!!!

Maybe it's just that being, easily, the shortest in my family group, makes 5'7.5" seem short. Either way, height in the United States is definitely shrinking. I find that shocking for some reason. I think, perhaps, due to it being vaguely reminiscent of Heinlein's short story The Locusts (1979). 🤔

I don’t buy this for a second. People are huge lately, especially kids. I was under the impression all the growth hormones in the food were making people bigger.

Seriously, in public, and around anyone under 30, the majority of people seem much, much taller. 🤷‍♂️

You’d probably get more useful statistics if you broke out average height by race, ethnicity, and economic groups. America has changed a lot in the last 40 years. Anyone non-white was definitely under represented in older statistics.

This is an excellent point. *nods*

The white middle class was the yardstick for everything for, oh, a few centuries.

I am an average man in a world of sciency-types.

I could look at statistics, but I do look at actual real people in life. They’re taller. I’m telling you.
Those darn statistics. They can be made to say anything. :p

The inter webs says the average number of sexual partners is 4-8.

With women averaging 4.3 and men 6.3.

Is it just me, or do these numbers seem crazy low?

I know Millennials are less sexually active than other generations, at least in partner variety, and they are a large group, with a 20+ share of the population, but . . . still. 🤔

I’m interested to have congee some day.

On a numbers kick lately?

Seems backwards. Considering the supply/demand situation 🤣

Yes, but…

Averages over a heterogeneous large population are practically meaningless. They’re great for news stories and social media, but really they don’t tell you anything useful.

Lots of people still partner up young and stay together. Even if you toss in a midlife crisis or two that’s still a small number of sexual partners.

I assume they mean at a time! 😁

Seems way low to me too

Movies as of late:

Thankskilling (2008) - I tried. Really I did. But the possessed killer turkey on a 3,500 budget was more than even I could handle. I made a whole ten minutes. Maybe fifteen. 😬

Unearthed (2007) - So much excitement when there was talk of a polygenic dye designed to attach to and identify DNA from samples, identifying which kingdom with a different assigned color!

Naturally I looked this miracle up.

Nope. Still the same old labor-intensive extraction, amplification, sequencing, and analysis. 🥺

I mean, maybe it's not entirely reasonable to expect cutting edge scientific techniques in a B sci-fi (okay, maybe C sci-fi) but . . . for some reason I am just so disappointed! 🤣
