Endless Ends

Quite the career progression for James Arness . . . from the actual Thing in the '51 movie to an FBI agent in "Them", and then on to Marshall Dillon. :)

Them! 1954.

I remember watching that for the first time on Saturday afternoon television as a child. It scared the everliving daylights out me.

The skulls they rolled out of the anthill….

I did not sleep for a week. 😳

With all of the Godzilla remakes, you'd think that someone would have done a more contemporary remake of Them.

And yes, I remember seeing it on TV when I was a kid and got the biggest kick out seeing that and shot to pieces by a tommygun in the sand storm. :)

Another interesting career path that foretold future status in Sci-Fi:

Leonard Nimoy has a small, uncredited part as a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant in the communications room in "Them", then played Narab, one of the three Martian invaders in the '52 movie serial "Zombies of the Stratosphere" . . .

Oooooooh. I would LOVE a remake of Them!!

Someone should make that happen.

LOL, I admire - and vaguely envy - your enthusiasm for destruction.

Holy kittens! I realized James Arness was in Them!, but I hadn't made the Leonard Nimoy connection!

I wonder it that serial is available for purchase? I have a newly minted burning desire to see Zombies of the Stratosphere.

I know serials were a *thing* in the 50s but I don't think I've seen any. Either they weren't shown on Saturday afternoon television, or else they'd quit showing them by the time I was watching.

I appreciate the horror and scifi geekiness in this thread. So much!

You guys are da bomb. :cattail:

Let's not forget these gems from late-night television and U-Tube obscurity.

Giant grasshoppers and another of the Arness brothers, Peter Graves.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beginning_of_the_End_(film)

And of course the giant praying mantis movie.

Of course, there's the one with dogs made up to look like shrews and another with a big ole gilia monster that I won't bother to look up. So yeah, monster movies were a big thing in the way back when for sure. They just have awful special effects that make you laugh.

Peter Graves and James Arness are/were related?!?!?

(I can't quite remember who Peter Graves is, but I know I know him. :p)

How can it be that I've seen neither of these movies? I mean, 200 foot praying mantis is RIGHT up my alley.

My movie tastes are notoriously lowbrow.

Whew!

*wipes brow with relief*

Errr, so you're not a cinematic historian. You did, however, raise the subject of pie pan flying saucers.

You owe me a movie name, sir.

I know my rights. :p

I didn't realize that Peter Graves and James Arness were brothers either!

He was well known for the television series "Mission: Impossible"

And he let his comedy hair down as Captain Oveur in "Airplane" - shown here with Leslie Nielson, another serious actor who got his funny on in the movie.

Leonard Maltin was a movie critic. Whether his peen is on the Net…I can’t say. Live dangerously

Please. *waves hand around*

I just had a skunk amble through my yard AND a scorpion take up residence in the box where work gloves are kept.

Don't talk to me about living dangerously! 😂

Ohhhhhhhhh! Airplane! Of course!

I fear I don't remember seeing Mission Impossible, but…wasn't Leonard Nimoy in that as well?

(I'm not sure how I know that.)

I can’t find one, you whipmistress. I know I have heard of cheaply movies in the 1950s doing that
