Do you find it odd that men, when sexualized, are sexualized the way women are instead of in a way more suited to male stereotypes?

Meant to say, I think there is some truth in this statement. Could it be that men are sexualized that way because it's more geared towards gay men?

Men, whatever their orientation are traditionally more likely to view porn.

In other words, we all enjoy a hot bikini girl bent over an old ‘70s muscle car, but, no matter how studly (or hyper masculine) a man can be, if you put him in a G-string and bend him over a ‘70s muscle car, it just seems kinda gay. That may work fine for gay guys, and God bless them, but how does that work for women? Are you just going with it because that’s mostly what’s available?

Shouldn’t sexualized guys be fit, shirtless and cleaning out a gutter, or fixing some plumbing, jackhammering () some concrete, or something more traditionally male?

Would you like that better or do you like your boys pretty?

The female gaze is absent, not because we don’t look, or see, admire and fantasise over handsome men, but because of the economic targets and the way everything is structured.
Men in places of power are still the majority, and none, NONE of them wants to think their wives, mothers or daughters like to look at handsome Henry Cavill looking men..
So sexualization is less used in products catered to women. (Toooootally missing a big opportunity, let me add,)
And traditionally women have less money to spend and less autonomy in how they spend it. Plus, after a certain age they spend less for themselves and more for children, family or the home.
Gay man , on the other hand , are a very high spending category, waaaay more than women in the any of the same age groups.
Et voilá . Les joeux sont faites .
The female gaze is erased. By men.

You will be amazed in discovering on ho how pretty much anything about women have been suppressed , understudied, undervalued or simply ignored.
Even in medical research.
Women have died during childbirth for millennia, yet many studies about the feminine reproductive system are relatively recent. Most studies on how the vagina, the clitoris etc work, have been done in the last 40/50years. It is a relatively recent discovery that women’s bodies react differently to many medications. Yet only fairly recently it has been rendered mandatory to test medicines on both men and women before approval.

And so on and so forth.

I've been considering this topic off and on all day and I feel like its relevance is underrated.

I like pretty. By that I mean what I think is attractive. For years, I had a physical "type". Meaning I must be visually stimulated to an extent.

Added to which, there have been pictures over the years that caught my attention. There was one someone posted way back when I first joined Lit. I looked for it when Muscles made his Female Gaze thread, to no avail.

A man sat in an armchair reading a book. Black and white pic. Somewhere between 45-50, rough guess. He was wearing a button down shirt, open at the throat, with his sleeves pushed up, and might have had a pair of glasses in his free hand.

No nudity. Nothing even overtly sexual. But.

Oof. There was something so intensely masculine. The smile. The relaxed pose. The casual reveal of the muscled male forearm. The strength he exuded. *bites lip*

If there was stuff I was interested in viewing, I think I would view.

Even in medical research.

We touched on some of this in grad school. It was eye opening.

There was some big pain medicine scandal way back, where the medicine worked on men but didn't touch women. (I can't remember the specific medications.)

Not surprisingly, as male-centric testing didn't end in the states until 1993.

Then there's Ambien. It was approved for use in 1992. Women - due to various biological differences (hormonal, fat composition, neuroimmunological pathway differences) - metabolize the active ingredient much more slowly. Which led to morning car accidents and other issues.

It wasn't until 2013 that the FDA halved the recommended dosage for women.

Yes, absolutely, and Matthew Mcshirtless first half of career too…
Still niche, as an example. But relevant as-I hope-a starting point. Traditionally the movie industry relied heavily on women’s money.
The scale it’s not even remotely comparable, though.
And working in fashion, I can tell you, most of those gay guys design dresses not for actual women , but for an idea of women they have in their head of how a woman should look like… and some of them even design thinking of pretty boys dressed like women.
(Things heard and seen with my own ears and eyes.. some of the comments reserved to model bodies are,,, unreal, for want of a better world)
On some things numbers don’t lie.
The future is going (I hope) to even the numbers a bit.. the moment the room is not filled with “just the guys” , but when the actual half of the decision making table will be women, maybe things will be seen from different point of views. (Reproductive laws are still being written without taking in consideration women point of view and without women at the table. And not only in the US. As light as we want to keep things, reality is still there plain to see.)

Scientific: the brain hates unfinished business. it gets stuck on it.

I don't thing these men are necessarily unmasculine. I generally prefer a somewhat more - as you put it - hyper masculine type, but these guys are definitely men. That take care of their bodies.

Hairless and well groomed have an almost stereotypical connotation of homosexuality, but that's not always the case.

For me, it can be very guy dependent.

This is quite verbose but interesting as hell: the gist is that the "real" molecules that used to give perfumes their soul are now outlawed and new molecules research and approval is too spendy for small perfumers who want to do niche. Mass industry relies on cheap and safe and successful molecules that are, in years, increasily "all the same".

And yes: people spritz and splash waaaaaaay too much.

However, let’s say I was one of those high power men doing research to see what women wanted, in terms of sexualizing men in movies, tv, advertising, etc., I would have come to the conclusion that nobody knows what they want and I would say “To Hell with it, just keep showing stuff for straight and gay men becuase at least they have a straight (no pun intended) answer.”

Don't get me started on this.
When studying fashion I used to get to act as dressing assistant in men's fashion show (free labour for the brands, free experience for the student) .. A few brands still favour super young, skinny , ephebic looking young men, other , thank god still employ manly men, some decide to cast different types of men, different ages etc. The latter got the best result in my opinion : the aesthetic of the models varies a lot depending on the brand aesthetic.
