I've posted before about my fascination with the Judge Dee Novels of the 1950-60s. Detective stories based on the historic Chinese official, Di Renjie, of the Tang dynasty.

To my delight, it turns out there are movies!!

Chinese movies. 2010-2013.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon
Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings

License is taken, like the Judge Dee vampire short stories, but they are very enjoyable.

-And, apparently, did well at the box office.
-And, and, in the process of viewing, I've managed to learn a fair amount of about the Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian, who was the only woman in Chinese history to make her way to sovereign rule.

It's a win, win.

A lesser known, possibly not really very good, okay really not very good, John Carpenter movie.

Still watchable, though.

If less educational.

A surprising cast. Natasha Henstridge, Pam Grier, Jason Stratham.

1) Because, why not? It's superb.
2) All that lovely, lovely less intensity of sun.
3) The snow and ice that insinuates there may, indeed, be an end to summer.

The Thing From Another World (1951)

The Thing's predecessor. Also top notch. They are both billed as sci-fi horror, but the intervening thirty years between filming offers an interesting juxtaposition on how just how much horror films have changed.

No gore in the older version - Though the gore in the 80's version is so over the top I'm not sure it really counts. - and a lot of the horror is tamped down by the black-and-white filming.

The signature, overlapping dialogue of Hawksian films give things an edge, which helps, as there are a lot of liberties with the original short story.

Especially the monster.
