Endless Ends

I was physically assaulted by a scorpion today. 😭

On the same foot as the wasp bite two weeks ago.

*shakes fist at universe*

On the same subject, how is it that in all my years in Texas I'd only seen a scorpion like twice. As a child. When some adult pointed it out as a warning.

Now that I've moved rural and more central, I've been positively inundated with the darn things.

I would foot stomp.

But my foot has been through enough lately. :p

Do scorpions have a natural predator you could introduce?
Hmmm. I do not know.

Is your farm unusually infested?
I never noticed them the first few years or so. There has been a lot of drought these past 2-3 years. My understanding is that they will congregate around water sources when it's dry. Presumably that's why the house seems attractive? 🤷‍♀️

I don't really know. But.

IT IS ANNOYING

Have dealt with those nasty critters before :(. . . my solution in and around the house is Ortho Home Defense Insect Spray.

I have used this for years and second the suggestion. It’s very effective.

No scorpions here, but with the warm weather and rain, it is now tick season. Found two on the dog last night. Little bastards. Hate them.

Hmmm. Is that better than Demon WP?

Ticks are the worst.

Part of the issue may be that around the house should be treated more? I am . . . pro as little chemical intervention as possible. But.

I'm willing to abandon all my principals to eschew more scorpion strikes. 😬

I’ve tried putting out Tick Tubes (empty toilet paper rolls stuffed with cotton that has insecticide on it). It might have helped, hard to tell. Deer move through all the time, so it just takes one pregnant female to drop a few thousand eggs to repopulate.

Yesterday was an outdoor work day.

-Somehow managed to pop myself in the jaw with the butt end of the lopers. Hard. Swelling, and a bruise. Ah, the joys of land work when one is klutzy. 🙄
-Did battle with a tree with thorns that always, always causes spiky grief when mowed around or walked by. It was a battle, but now there is now a canopy* that allows for traversing. Of course, I ended up covered in long bloody scratches - but I'm still considering it a win. 😎

*Yes, I could have just trimmed it back, but I like to do canopy so as to maximize shade in the sun and heat.

Today is an inside day. I slept in and plan to nurse my injuries while cooking and watching bad movies. 💪

Back when I first came to the farm, my plan was to engage in silvopaturing on a small scale. Space is limited, and being responsible for animals, if only a few, is too much pressure, so I've moved on to turning the place into something of a cross between a Native and Ecoglocial garden.

Note my pursuit has been based on little - make that none - horticultural knowledge or experience.

I have garned a whole new respect for farmers. How? How do they manage to manage nature. It's a wonder any of us get fed.

Traditional farming means cutting everything native back and using lots of weedkiller. Plus lots of going through the rows and killing weeds.

Constantly.

My food gardening plan - I think. It changes constantly. 😂 - is to create a potager garden eventually. Next year. Maybe the year after after.

The plan is to start slow. This year basil, micro greens, and just possibly a Three Sisters patch.

I need the growing practice.

Also, promises on that last one. Because I am a slacker. :p

Okay. Today.

Made chili and congee. Boiled eggs and fried bacon for salads (and congee). Decanted milk. Planted basil (Woohoo! 😝)

I might possible make kheer if the milk separates quickly enough.

Now, I go to mow. Because it seems I somehow forgot to mow the archery field yesterday.

Honestly. My mind is like a sieve. 🤦‍♀️

So. Movies in the background today, as requested. :p

1) Lost Voyage (2002) - This should have been a decent supernatural thriller, given the cast or respectable actors. It was surprisingly bland.

2) Deep Freeze, aka Ice Crawlers (2001) - This I'd seen before. The name change fooled me. Decent B sci-fi horror. (y)

3) Reptilicus (1961) - Possibly the worst special effects of any movie ever. EVER. And, just . . . well, something.

-The creatures was some kind of puppet? Vaguely Godzilla like, except far worse.
-In the first half, they were always losing the creature. No never mind that the terrain was flat plain with no trees.
-He spit green cartoon slime.
-Whenever the creature did appear, its lower body was always masked by gorges that magically managed to appear on above plains.
-The American in charge was a rude, overbearing, obnoxious warmonger.
-Who continuously told the women (even those with advanced degrees) to: Stay out of this, woman's name!
-There were an amazing number of extras considering what had to be a shoe-string budget. 🤔

And, worse -

Yes, amazingly, there is worse. 😬

-There was one scene where Reptilicus ate a farmer. This was achieves, by tossing a rudimentary cartoon drawing (badly drawn) into the monster's mouth.

. . . . . . . . .

Why? Why are these movie makers not embarrassed? 🫣

I need a palate cleanser.

*toodles off to find some Agatha Christie*

-I absolutely hate driving the interstate when those concrete barriers are up on both sides prior to construction. They're like Corridors of Death. 😬

-When you have a well is a side yard, is the grass in the side yard less pretty because the well sucks the water in the area, or because it's another kind of grass? 🤔

-"Bulge your pelvic floor," is, quite possibly the oddest expression I've heard in a medical setting . . . . Yep. It is.
