I'd like to improve my writing, of course. I would like to have a better understand of our current political climate. I would like to know why people insist on speaking to me before I've had my 2 cup minimum in the morning.

An area of ignorance? Languages. I took both Latin and Spanish in high school and have lost both. I would at least like to pick back up on Spanish, ideally become fluent. It's on my to do list.

I'd like to brush up on my knowledge of immunology and infectious diseases.

Sheer ignorance? Let's go with pretty much everything else. The world is a mystery.

Area to Improve: Grammar. Oh, I can string a sentence together, but the finer nuances are a mystery. Lots of moving around as a child, high school only half complete before my precipitate exit from home base. I took a test for high school equivalency (no course work) and then placed out of freshman english in college (mad vocab skillz. ). All my degrees since are in the biological sciences where technical writing styles rule.

Should I learn? Absolutely. Just as soon as I get past my little mental block. Toss out a little technical jargon of the wordy variety and my brain just freezes.


Area of Ignorance: So many! Toss up between music and languages. Let’s go with language. I speak English. Only. I’d love to be a polyglot, but, truthfully, I don’t have much of an ear.

I'd revisit our wedding night. 'Twas simply perfect.

I'd like to expunge from my memory, though, my earlier experiences with the cockteasing woman who thought that it would be cruel fun to play games with my naivety: getting me worked up, leaving me high and dry, but then leaving me in hope that the next time might go further. That messed up my head for a few years.

Although I'm historically something of a polymath, I'm less interested these days in cramming my head full of facts. I'd much rather extend my range of human experiences: learning from other people, immersing myself in their subjective experiences and, as a side-benefit, discovering a bit more about myself.

Oh, and I still want to learn to play a musical instrument. I'm still suffering from the delusion that I have a natural ear and an intuitive grasp for music. I've never had anyone around me, though, who can encourage me with the practical skills.

My honest answer to this is now. The 1800s sound all romantic until the doctors come at you with their leeches. And I honestly have no idea what sort of person I would be without the internet.

Buuut in the interest of actually answering the question...

I would want to experience the California gold rush. Probably just romanticized with my childhood history classes. But America's last horizon. Exploring. Striking out and trying to make it. And the Sierra Nevadas are so beautiful. What would they have looked like then?

Oh! If I live a few more decades I could meet Jack London!

Of course that was all terrible for the natives, but...

It's really difficult to imagine myself in an earlier era, because, as a 'career' woman (horrible expression) with no interest in child-rearing, I'd have been a fish out of water. The only time I can come up with which wouldn't have had me leading someone else's idea of 'a suitable life' might be London's Swinging Sixties, after the invention of the contraceptive pill.

That might have been fun!

So much of this resonates with me. I'm still smashing glad cielings in 2017, and I couldn't imagine trying to do it in any earlier a generation. My mum did, she was also "the first female ..." a lot. I guess I admire the heck out of her for doing it before it was a social movement.

Now if I could change genders, and experience any time as a man, I think I'd go back to stop the insemination of Roger Stone.

I would say 1962-1966, when mores were changing, cars were badass and the Beatles were changing history. The advent of the miniskirt would have been particularly fun to be around, along with Gaslight Square in its heyday. But I would want to get out before it became too heavy.

I would like to have been born in Victorian era London. The fashion of the day appeals to me. Of course, I'd have been lower class, probably a maid or cook in someone's household when I grew up. Still, I love the idea of it.

I also think I'd have liked growing up in the early days of this country, when families traveled in wagons to untouched lands and created a home for themselves. To grow up poor, but proud, learning to care for a home and a family, to tend a garden that wasn't just for fun but needed to keep my family alive. To someday meet a man at a barn dance or church social and leave my father's home to make a new one with him. To have a hot meal waiting when he comes in from the fields hot and sweaty, smelling of dust and leather. To heat water for his bath while he eats, then wash his back and rub his shoulders while he soaks away the burdens of his day. *sigh*

I'm a huge WWII history buff. So, 1940's. Plus the music was awesome.
Maybe born in a neutral country though? Banker in Switzerland? Eh...who am I kidding...I'd want to wade ashore at Normandy...

Late 1800s. I did a certain amount of age-inappropriate reading as chicklet. At some point I fell into a pile of family sagas, replete with drama, rivalry, betrayal. It left me wanting to be a...wait for it...robber baron. Yeah.

They always seemed to live such interesting lives, those fictional bandits.

Of course, I hadn’t considered the gender issue. Were there any female robber barons? That might require a little body switching, and, oddly enough, I rather like being a woman.

That’s ecological and human right’s issues aside. Not to mention I’d be a terrible robber baron. Too much empathy. Drat!
