Emily’s pretentiousness thread

At the risk of being on topic...

I'd say that the most predominant theme in my stories is seconds chances and redemption.

It's the obvious theme of My Fall and Rise, as the title makes clear.

It is the main theme in Oyster River and in Wild Birds of Maine, and figures prominently in in Mary and Alvin, and in The Last Time I Saw Clara, and to a lesser degree in Isabel.

Sex work is an important theme as well, featuring to at least some degree in MFAR, The Gold Dollar Girls stories, One Night in Detroit, The Last Time I Saw Clara, and The Dancing Ghost of Webster's Gore.

Personally I don’t think discussion of themes in our work is pretentious and I think there’s enough of us here to come up with…FIVE THEMES?! (Flucking hell!). All right I’ll give it a go.

1. In ATDAH the big theme is how not communicating with the person you love about your desires can become Toxic. It’s the central core of the story.
2. In HAF I also look at his social media can paint a picture of normality that masks cracks in relationships.
3. In the upcoming THE PROCESS the tale is a cautionary one that something that looks too good to be true often is.
4. Er…speaking English with a French accent is sexy?
5. HOT FUZZ is flucking awesome.

4 and 5 were best 😊

My on topic candidate is my notion of socially responsible erotica, where one thinks more deeply into the impact one's writing has on others, and strives for the positive.

This came from a comment where someone said that my writing was a "safe haven" for her, giving her some respite from an obviously troubled life. That humbled me, to think that my self-indulgent scribblings might actually be useful.

Another set of responses thanked me for giving voice to people with disabilities, with my story Rope and Veil, which explored what sexuality might be like for a person with a broken back. Getting affirmative feedback from people in that situation was, again, very moving, very humbling.

Themes in stories? I have way too many to list but most have a happy ending.

Fastest Thread Derail EVER. 😆 🐙

To actually answer the topic:

I don't know that all my stories have themes or messages.

At least not heavy handed ones.

At least I hope not heavy handed.

Consent is a pretty consistent theme for me.

Also women characters that are more than just sex objects.

After that, I dunno. Perhaps someone who's read my stories could tell me what "messages" they got from them.

Masturbating is better with an audience?

More seriously, from Mya Watches, there are always ways to be intimate, even if things are preventing some ways, as long as there is a loving connection and an appreciation for the importance of finding that intimacy.

Thanks. Forgot about that one.

I guess my stories have messages, I just try not to get preachy about them.

Maybe a general overall theme in my stories is simply: embrace your kinks instead of fighting them.

I'm with Emily and SimonDoom in most of their previously posted comments. I will add the following concerning my own works-

- All sources of inspiration should be appreciated for their merits, and the demerits acknowledged also, as possible within the work.
- Positive depictions are better than negative, transformative should be accentuated.
- It is always good to build bridges to tolerance and acceptance, to broaden your horizons.
- Smart strong multitalented women are sexy. Men too, depending on how you swing.
- I write for Carla, as per the film "The Rock". She's my Prom Queen. See the movie if you need further explanation.
- When you assemble the jigsaw puzzle of your soul, you should be able to see yourself assembling the same picture and accept what you have done, ignoring the mad doppelganger standing behind you if necessary.
I know the last one sounds weird, but trust me, it's true. :) Trying to inspire a future story, excuse me. LOL. I may not post the story, we'll see.

Nuns are sexy 😬.

Em

Ha, ha! Where I live, opposite a Catholic respite care home, they seem to be grumpy, perma-scowling and disgusted with me (I don't know why - I look perfectly respectable, wear suits to work, take my daughter to the playground and teach her to have a modicum of social graces, and in particular, I don't wear my atheism on my sleeve). Perhaps they are disgusted with my neighbours, too, but I don't see it.

I forgive them, though, as they do a lot of work caring for adults with severe learning difficulties. I do live in hope of seeing them play football one day...

Two themes I love exploring:

  • Great sex is great communication. We tell each other things with our bodies we can’t or don’t say with our words.
  • The odds of there being one soulmate for you are low, but some people feel perfect, like you’re a lock and they’re a key (or vice versa). Those people can help you take flight in life.

OK - so getting ideas above my station (NBK I guess), this thread is about any overall themes or (yes I know 😬) messages in your work.

I think I have a few:

  1. Sex is a wonderful gift, makes the world a better place, and should be celebrated
  2. Sex, of pretty much any consensual form, can be healing, and nourishing, and a force for good
  3. Guilt about sex is a cause of misery, throwing this off is liberating
  4. Like anything human, sex can be turned into a weapon and used to make people misrable; doing this is a crime against all humanity
  5. Octopuses are so fucking sexy
Em
Themes in mine:

  1. People can be imperfect and damaged, and still deserving of happiness and a loving relationship
  2. Ethics: people trying to be responsible in how they pursue their sex lives
  3. Grey-area relationships: people not sure exactly what they are to one another
  4. Neurodivergence (though only explicitly flagged in one story because it took me a while to realise I was writing ND characters...)
  5. Non-monogamy
  6. Nerd facts
