I've been invited to help cull the herd at a private ranch. They were unable to sell all of their elk tickets this year due to the economy. Regardless, good game management requires that the herd be culled.

I'll be thinking of all of you while I'm out there freezing my ass off. :D

Should I give the targets Lit names? If so, and if you could live vicariously, what names first?

Guess :D

Make sure it's a female, slightly ragged-looking, with dominance tendencies, ok?

I'm going to fill out my Wapiti tag with the S-10.

The MO Dept. of CONs wants to reintroduce the fuckers. I guess wolves are next...

Name one sigh. Betcha can't shoot it.

Do you get to keep the meat? That'd be cool. I could be eaten vicariously.

"I hear the Elk are as big as Buffalo this year"

What move is this quote from?

elk were released in the eastern panhandle of wv a few years ago. about 20 years ago elk were released in kentucky. some of those are now moving across the border into wv.
mountain lions have been spotted in wv in the last ten years, but no way to confirm it. no pics of animals or their tracks.
be cool to kill an elk. one would feed me for a year. but by the time their numbers are high enough here i'll either be dead, or too old to go hunting.

You do have this 'sick' streak that shows up now and again. :)

I have seen mountain lions in KANSAS and bear in Missourah...

Do you have storage for an elk? I would need another deep-freezer.

About 220 lbs boneless meat, avg. A large bull might yield as much as 400+ lbs.

It's all deer to me...

:D Might have been Caribou.

I thought so. Known as Reindeer by our European cousins.

Interesting little factoid, petroglyphs indicate that the first lap dance was performed in far northern Europe about 10,000 yrs ago. Archeologists are unsure what the tip was.

And a Wyoming Knife. Best tool to open up a large animal, IMO.

My brother-in-law from my first marriage is a game ranger in South Africa.
He has had to take part in big game culls.... my then-husband and I went along to an elephant cull in 1993....
Anyway, after the cull, a whole village of Zulu's came in to cut up the meat (absolutely nothing is wasted, and the only part they cannot take are the tusks), and you would not believe the puny little knives they were using to carve up the carcasses!
I was astonished at how quickly and efficiently they worked, given the lack of equipment!
57 animals altogether, over 4 days.
The park simply can't support the number of animals.
