Should the electoral college be done away with? Does it make sense in the 21st century?

Thoughts?

On the one hand, it sucks that it makes elections come down to a few counties in a few states. It effectively disinfranchises the vast majority of states and voters from any meaningful say in the election.

On the other hand, how would a single nationwide campaign be possible? You'd end up with an entire campaign based on negative TV ads. The candidates wouldn't know which states to visit. I'm not sure that would be good.

Never understood it... let's just count the votes and let that be it.

As much as I hate the EC I see the use and I don't have a plan to replace it just yet so it gets to stay.

And what's that got to do with a thread on the Electoral College in the first place?

You - yourself- seemed to jump at the chance to intentionally colorize it...

...with your "the wealthy black freemen" retort.

In response to the dope who "colorized" it by making the statement about "wealthy white folks."

Why does it need to be replaced? It's useless. Just count the votes and whoever has the most wins. Democracy is a popularity contest.

Keep it.

It's weird, it's antiquated, but it serves its purpose.

What purpose? I honestly don't know and no one has been able to explain it to me. It seems like an unnecessary extra step. From what i learned, it basically throws your vote out, because the electoral college doesn't even HAVE to vote for their constitutes. It's like the retarded version of the Illuminati.

Republic

The reason for the Electoral College is simply that the USA is a Republic. People do not vote for any person above the State level. Then states choose the President through the EC.

It would require a Constitution overhaul to do what some suggest.

So? We've done it before when we realized we were doing stupid shit. Restricting voting in general to property owning white adult males? That's stupid. Even if we wanna be racist and sexist, we ought not send folk to war who can't vote. So we changed it. Then we were like, 'wait, racism and sexism are also stupid'. There's a whole list of shit that was stupid so we changed it. We totally have the ability to do that.
