Anyone have any good recommendations for editors? Picking one from the volunteer list seems kind of like Russian roulette to me. Any help is appreciated.

If you haven't already found and editor youcan work with, you can either play russian roullette with the vlunteer editor's list, or go to the editors' form and beg.

What I do when I have a story ready for editing is play russian roullete with about ten selections from the volunteer editor list.

I've found that it is nearly impossible to have too many opinions on a story before submitting it -- every editor finds something different to correct or comment on.

The story content also has an effect on whether an editor is suitable -- the same editor might be great on humor and satire, but give you bad advice on a fetish story.

Make the best guess you can fromthe editors' blurbs and keep trying until you find an editor that isn't busy and works well with your style of writing.
