For what it's worth... the current dramas with the 'Home page' notifications mean that some comments from readers have slipped through the notification cracks - ie they don't appear on the archived list of notifications or the new list of notifications. I've found two of these for different stories.

And that means that there's a glorious opportunity to hunt through your stories to see whether you missed anything! Picture a world where we don't get all the comments spoon fed to us in our feed, but instead have the joy of stumbling across them during an Easter Egg hunt....

But comments are so rare that if I were to check my stories specifically for those then it would quickly get disheartening. Just like a little kid wandering into the part of the Easter egg hunt that the bigger kids had already swept through. Yeah sure they still might find something, but more likely they're going to sit down and cry that the Easter bunny doesn't love them.

I've already had that happen before this new "update."

I've stumbled across several comments on old stories I am 100% sure I had never received a notification for.

Fair enough, but you might meet somebody else wandering the deserted fields and offer each other a hug, and then have a glorious romance.....

It all makes it tempting to send a DM instead of a Comment, or perhaps use the contact the author button to send them an email outside of Lit. Once the anonymous commenters figure it out, they'll probably quit commenting altogether.

Can you set it it so comments are always off by default?

Would be handy. Forums give much better feedback so far for me.

Click on the gear at the far right of your story tab and you'll get a pop up:

I always enjoy seeing what people have written on stories that I'm reading (and thank you for your comment on my recent story by the way) - quite often there's a different take on things, or even just a validation of perspective. Sometimes the anonymous comments are the most interesting as well!
