I had a quick question for background sake: Was Superman the first established hero in this world? Was he just the Babe Ruth of the hero world where there were other heroes before him but a lot of people are fuzzy on who they are?

this is correct. He would have been the first in the world eye. Batman might have been out before him but was more of a rumor outside of Gotham. But most definately Sups is the first out in public.
