............A Soldier's Song.............

This is the AUTHORS HANGOUT !!!
I am looking for poems and stories and
writings of a mutual nature concerning
our WARRIORS !!!! (Soldiers) not so much
a debate on politics and military tactics...
Not that all opinions aren't appreciated
and emotions on this topic are extremely
high so I wish not to step on any toes...

(Guess what this poem is about...smiles)

In the distance I hear'em cry.
The sound of sorrow thats deep inside.
The majestic EAGLE that fly's so high.
Is not soaring in the sky.

The thunder bellows across a land.
For a captured and fellow AMERICAN.
The WARRIOR'S song is sung this day.
And may he come home in a safe way.

Feel his fear in hearts so near.
Dry the water'd eyes from the one he calls dear.
For HELL will shake when the EAGLE comes.
His enemies had better run.

Hear the cry of the EAGLE high.
For many more will surely die.
The frightening sound of a gun shot round.
To bring home one thats held and bound.

The code of WARRIORS is a storng one.
To do battle untill we've won.
Sorrow filled hearts that still cry.
For the ones that have already died.

Who do I call the enemy.
FEAR and SORROW that is within me.
Listen well you foreign man.
The EAGLE is coming for our AMERICAN.

(final note:I shine with pride
from writing this...as my head bows low
from a world torn by war)....Art

( No body wins a war...)

I have AOL... woke up this morning and read
about our captured AMERICAN.

I can't begin to tell you the feelings that got stirred
but I had to vent so I wrote this. I didn't want to be
accused of HIjacking any body else's thread. So I
created this one. Any body feel as deeply about
our WARRIORS as I do?

Last week alone we lost 50 more lives...and yes
that should be even more sorrow felt. Not to mention
the thousands that have perished already in this
campaign But death is final (so to say)
But when we know one of our own sits there in fear...
I can only hope that our Generals call out the
posse and take care of this.

As an ex-soldier and a Martial Artist with MY own
school I feel the cries of a fellow WARRIOR!!!!!!!!
(Inner Spirit Martial Arts waves a flag at half mast)

We AMERICANS have motto...
NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND...

We Brits have a different perspective.

Our soldiers have been buried where they fall for hundreds of years. 'Some part of a foreign field is forever England.'

We revisited our graveyards in Iraq from WWI and WWII.

Our troops are buried in the Falkland Islands.

Every year there are people travelling to far-flung parts of the world to visit the graves of their relatives.

Mine are buried in Italy, Africa, France, Germany, Belgium - and that's just in the 20th century.

Family friends are buried at Gallipoli, in Burma, Malaya, New Guinea and the Western Front.

More were buried at sea.

As for hostages - the British attitude used to be that it is not worth risking other lives to save a hostage. A WWII soldier would give name, rank and number and no more. If that meant he was killed - he died. If he was put in the way of an advancing army - the army wouldn't stop to save that one man.

The Germans in the Blitzkreig of early WWII would deliberately force civilians to flee towards the British/French to impede their operations. Only after D-Day were the Allies determined enough to kill civilians forced to be in the way of a military objective. The long bombing campaign had shown that the only way to fight a war is to fight hard.

Using hostages to try to change the enemy's fighting ability only works against a weak enemy who is not determined enough to win. It didn't work for the Nazis in occupied France. it shouldn't work for the people fighting the Allied forces in Iraq.

I feel sadness for anyone taken as a hostage. I feel sadness for anyone killed fighting in Iraq. I would not want Allied troops wasted trying to rescue a hostage. Their lives are just as individually valuable to their country and their families.

Og

Thank you og~

Thanks og! for that perspective and yes
you have a very good point in many ways.

To even begin to bring up past battles and losses
is a good point to assure we do not make the same
mistakes. The war in Iraq is a drop in a bucket
compared to some of the battles you've mentioned.

Hamburger hill and D-day along with pearl harbor and
hiroshima along with many many more tragedies...

I vented in this poem and the feelings of war strike
us all I am sure. Even with Jessica parker our
patience was tried in the Iraq war. They were
lucky to get any soldiers back. The Brits are our
strongest Allie and have put their selves on the line
for many many to be free.

I am not sure that I am saying risk more to save one.
I wish to encourage a faster solution to an already
deadly situation.

Thanks for the enlightenment Og~

As someone with a close relative stationed in Iraq... if he were to be captured, I would be very angry and upset if nothing were being done to help get him back.

I can understand those who wouldn't want to risk other lives for that of one person, but in a way, you are saying that what he had done for his country is worth nothing and that he is dispensible. I can guarantee you, the family of that person does not feel that way.

It's a moving poem, Art. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks CM~

You are most welcome...I only wish I could
fix the problem...I had to releive the sorrow
inside how else to Artist do it but to create...

I don't wish to step on any toes...but as Og
put it...

"Using hostages to try to change the
enemy's fighting ability only works against
a weak enemy..."

I feel this only strengthens our purpose.

Let's not forget the over 500 Iraqis who've been killed too, some of whom may have deserved it, but most of whom did not. They had families, and people who loved them and cared about them too. And all the others who've been wounded and had their lives shattered and destroyed by the invasion.

War sucks. It's a lose/lose game. We seem to think today we can go play it like a videogame where only the "badguys" get greased and seem shocked when it turns out not to be like that. When you get down to it, a soldier is a soldier because he's willing to kill and supposedly willing to be killed as well.

Yes, this is a tragedy, but it was also inevitable, and it's one among thousands of tragedies over there, most of which have gone entirely unremarked and unnoticed because they happened to the other side.

---dr.M.

I just wanted to add that I do feel for this man and his family and I want him back. But I also feel for the innocent victims over in Iraq, of which there have been so many, and of whom we take absolutely no notice. They count too.

The Realm~

To hear the sound of steel that slide,
along the scabbard that it does reside.
Awakens the soul, as death does knock.
How much more time is there on our clock.

The WARRIOR knows the sound of blood.
That drips deep red in the mud.
For the sound of steel slicing the air.
Our enemy better beware.

.....................................Samari...............

Thanks Doc~

Yes, a very good point that so SO many have
given their life in this tragedy...and so many
have not been given the publicity that this
one lone hostage faces...but here we sit, while
there he sits. And the war rages on.

Poem or song...its an expression of feelings.
this poem was mine and would love to hear
others...These are very good points you made...
of course you said it best with...

"It's a lose/lose situation..."
and the tragedy is on both sides but rarely have
I sat at a ball game and heard some one root
for both sides...AMERICA...is where I live so it
is them that I back right or wrong...
......say it in a song......

I'm with the good Dr and Oggie on this one, war is shit, no real winners. War was different way back of course, not so high tech and more sort of personal, you actually saw your enemy, often face to face, not as now, dropping things on them from a mile or so up. I too have various uncles and other relatives spread about the world planted somewhere in a foreign field or jungle.

As we're finding though the supposed peace is just as bad... this phase isn't war of course... not even part of the world war on Terrorists... This is a bunch of Iraqi's trying it on to get their own way after years of being held back.

Unfortunately these types don't follow the same sort of rules as do we... They are also very hard to subdue or control because they are willing to die for their cause, and think that all of their enemies should feel the same way. They have no military training, and I doubt they keep a copy of the rules of 'The Geneva Convention' handy.

To the Iraqi captors, these hostages they're grabbing at the moment are no more than cannon fodder put there by the enemy. The troops occupying their lands are just a bunch of invading savages to these people. We can all throw our arms up and protest about this hostage taking and other war like acts in Iraq, but we must remember, we are occupying someone else's country, some locals are bound to be a bit pissed off.

Given these circumstances it will be a very difficult and bloody task rescuing anyone from them. That's not to say nobody should try, just that it could be doomed to disaster.

Ok~

I have heard it twice now that we're on their land...
and I agree with the concept if we were dealing
with rational and full mentality but....

(A comparison)
In chicago a fight broke out in a school yard.
a teacher broke it up...in the event a gang
took arms and held the teacher hostage.

Now the swat team is called in to what shoot
children with guns?

You can't tell them that there is no Santa Clause
(hope I didn't burst any bubbles there) or
that Ala doesn't exist or that our way is better.
Or that their cause is youth full minded.
You negotiate with a mentality? There is
only several ways to deal with a crowd that
takes up arms...and sadly death will probably
prevail...so who's it gonna be? If their not
stopped it will continue...and who's chosen to
baby sit the world? The BRIT'S and AMERICANS!!
We seem to be the only ones with a parental
mentality...

I feel I've strayed from my original intent...but
I appreciate the facts given here and all these
issues do contribute to the main problem.
There is a son of an AMERICAN held, and I'm
sure the swat team ( Special Forces ) is centered
around a table as we speak trying to figure out
how to get this one lone Hostage FREE again.

I too am a WARRIOR and I agree with the concept
that when you become a SOLDIER you are ready
to kill or be killed, but lets not write this SOLDIER
off quite yet. As long as there is a breath in him...
we will work to get him FREE. perhaps I'm hopeful
but I prefer to be that way.

I have too much to say on this topic. I have cried too many tears. I have balled up my fists and pounded my walls too many times.

So I will say only this: There is no rational and full mentality in war.

:rose:

Keeping the topic narrowed~

ours...

"My name is Keith Matthew Maupin.
I am a soldier from the 1st Division,'' he said,
looking into the camera. "I am married with a
10-month-old son. I came to liberate Iraq,

Maupin, of Batavia, Ohio, went missing with
Sgt. Elmer C. Krause, 40, of Greensboro, N.C.,
after their convoy was attacked. They are
assigned to the Army Reserve's 724th
Transportation Company, based at
Bartonville, Ill, and Krause's fate was unknown.

At least 15 foreigners, according to an Associated
Press tally, remain held or unaccounted for in
the recent wave of abductions.

"We'd like to say, `Matt, we love you and
we can't wait until we get to hug you again,'''
said Carl R. Cottrell II, the boyfriend of
Maupin's sister. He wore a yellow ribbon
pinned to his shirt and was flanked by
military officers.

then...Iraq

"Some of our groups managed to capture
one of the American soldiers, and he is one
of many others. He is being treated according
to the treatment of prisoners in the Islamic
religion and he is in good health,'' the gunman
said on the tape, a copy of which was dropped
off at the U.S. Embassy in Doha, Qatar.

final note:..."Right now we are respecting that.
But this has got to come to a head one way or
another,'' Col. Dana J. H. Pittard, commander
of the soldiers surrounding the city, said Friday.

and the war rages on....

It means too much for a short reply and it hurts too much to write it all.

Heart felt~

minsue~

I feel as though I've said enough yet The
words race through my heart...

To look a man in the eye...
doesn't mean you see eye to eye~

To express your soul...
doen't mean he will know!~

That your intentions are good...
and that you would change it if you could.~

The blood that runs from the body that tryed...
doesn't help him as he lay to die~

To defend ones home does one not rage war
on it's intruder?
And the neigbor that beats his wife to death..
is his home yet I can hear the cries even though
I bury my head in my pillow.
Dare I stand by while the looters run rampant?
For it is not my store...should I do more?

All Martial artist and soldiers take an oath...
to defend oneself, family and country!!!
I am sure Iraq feels the same...but we have freed
them from the number one Terroist their leader...
then another steps up and claims to be their
"Holy Leader" and drives them back into war???

Soldiers Song~

A friend sent this to me after I created this thread:
(although I am not religious I felt it very moving)

WRITTEN BY ONE OF OUR OWN WHO IS OVERSEAS
Soldiers song (by a soldier in Iraq)

here is the text to it so you can see.

To everybody back home,

Back home now I know you're prob'ly sleeping,
But over here it's the middle of the day.
I finally found some time to write a letter,
Sittin' here a half a world away.

I heard about all them folks protesting,
As if I really want this war.
But that don't stop me from believing
There're just some things worth fighting for.

And if I die before you wake,
I pray the world will take
A good look at what God's given us.

If we could only understand
Everything is in His hands.
All we need is a little faith and trust.
I want you to know it ain't too high a price to pay
If I die before you wake.

Tell everybody that I miss them,
and I can't wait to get back home.
Until then, I'll serve my country
and be proud to wear this uniform.

And if I die before you wake,
I pray the world will take
A good look at what God's given us.

If we could only understand
Everything is in His hands.
All we need is a little faith and trust.

I want you to know it ain't too high a price to pay
If I die before you wake.

No, it ain't too high a price to pay
if I die before you wake.

Everything is in His hands

Doing 'nothing' and not risking more families' sons and daughters are not the same.

I am not saying that he is replaceable. He isn't. But every other soldier and civilian is also unique. Why should 2 or 3, or 20 or 30, die to rescue one? That is what his captors want to happen.

War is war. People die. Real people not images on a computer screen or objects on a satellite's view.

When a country goes to war it should expect that some of its soldiers will die. It may be a few. It could be many. Deaths in Iraq are as nothing compared with the Pacific campaign of WWII yet the US never thought of not fighting that campaign to the end.

Every person who dies is a loss to the human race.

"Ask not for whom the bell tolls."

Og

Ask not for whom the bell toll~

Thanks Og~

The concept of looseing many to save one is
ludicrice~ I understand your concept...
sad but true...WAR IS HELL~

Just a thought...

How many have sat with clamy palm upon
his weapon ...scanning the terrain for the
grim reeper. The long days and longer nights
of serving freedom. Told to shoot and ask
questions later,,,called ground checking..

How many have followed the leader to a place
of horror were your ears ring from the constant
shelling and fireing of rounds after round. Not
knowing if the local that brings you water is
friend or foe. So you thirst till your mouth is
parched for the uncertanty.

Have you ever pee'd in your pants cause your
fighting didn't allow you the time to releive
yourself. The sweat that stained from several
days wear cause there wasn't an oppertunity
to change for the drive to conquer was more
important.

To reflect back on the eyes that looked into
yours as their life left them by your own hand.
enough said...war is HELL.

So I see freedom as HEAVEN

Finally~

When I started this thread...in the
...................AUTHORS HANGOUT !!!..........

I was hoping for poems and writings of a
mutual nature on the subject of OUR WARRIORS !

Thank you Bama~
this is more what I was hopeing for...not a debate
on politics and military tactics...not that all opinions
aren't appreciated...but as a mutual LIT-ite I was
shooting for poetry and writings,,, well songs
too...

any body else have any please post...thank you

Rupert Brooke

I cannot hope to match this, written during the First World War:

The Soldier

By Rupert Brooke

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign filed
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England born, shaped, made aware.
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Neither can I Amigo~...Thanks og~

(wow Og~...love your location...smiles)

This hit the nail on the head with a hammer...
Not only does the truth shine but the passion
as well...thank you ever so much for shareing...

I was conversing with another about the
statement I made that our motto was that...

...We Americans never leave any one behind...

I was very kindly reminded that one of the most
beautiful of the American veteran memorials of
our service-mens burial is in CAMBRIDGE England.
This of course was WWII and another is in Italy...
Since then we fly the soldiers home to be buried
in Arlington if at all possible...But I was told the
one in Cambridge is the most elegant that the
U.S. has and use's still if need be...

I was born in TACHIKAWA AFB JAPAN !!!

I was a AFB brat and spent most of my youth
in the South Pacific...and Central America...

The point is that most Americans haven't a clue
what it's like in another world outside U.S. soil.
The views and opinions of Americans...lol well
There are alot that do...Any countryman will
stand proud of their Country...and America
as well as England (PAVE THE WAY) for many
and the mentality of this world...

That is the EXPRESSION I got from Og's~ post...

I was in Central America. The jungle raids are
intense and many soldiers were never found.
The vast density of the jungle swallowed them
up. Nonethe less a Marker stands for them.
I know the jungle is the yin and the yang...lol..
Of fighting in the desert...but the mind set of a
soldier at war is probably the same as any
battle ever fought...
And the mind set of a captured soldier probably
varies slightly depending on their captures...

Thanks again OG~ for the insight and enlightenment.

He who draws a breath shall release it...
He who draws a sword shall use it...
He who takes up arms may fire it...
He who goes to battle may draw his last
breath with his sword in arms...

I can;t remember it exactly...but it also
goes hand in hand with ....

Live by the sword...die by the sword...

I seen were Og~ had posted somewhere
that "Some one writes something and someone else
will read it totally different from its intended purpose...
and take it wrong" (or something similar) I think
this is a good point here ...I read this yesterday
and my emotions must have had me some place else...

This is so true WHAT POP SAID...This is not a part
of the war at all but a bunch of locals making dealings
to retrieve some of their own people back from the
prisons of Allied forces...THANKS FOR NOTE-ING THAT~

this is what i get for clicking links

They are our soliders.

They are our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives.

They did not ask to be sent overseas. They did not ask to be shot at by people that they are trying to defend and defeat.

We as Americans have over and over come to the defense of almost every nation in the world. So many times at horrific loss of our own.

And ya know what just bothers me to know end.

The complete and utter lack of anything close to gratitude.

I don't want to hear... well its there land you came in and weren't invited... blah blah blah

If that same thing held true and we didn't show up uninvited....
HOW MANY COUNTRIES OF MODERN DAY EUROPE WOULD STILL BE STANDING FREELY?????

You don't want the US in your country, defending your land so that you don't have to get your pretty hands dirty.... fine!

Pick up a weapon and defend your own gawd damn lands, oil fields, property and what ever else but don't you dare come to us when you get beaten down and cannot stand on your own two feet. Don't you dare raise your fist at us and curse us because we did exactly what you wanted and stayed out of your country.

Yall want to blow each other to hell you go right ahead but send MY father, MY ex husband, MY uncles and dozens of MY friends home first before you all commit suicide you ungrateful bastards.
