I watched Swingers tonight. This weekend it will be Blood Simple and Once Upon a Time in America.

I bumped Blood Simple up in my queue after that Coen Bros. thread.

Solved! I love it when a plan comes together.

I've got one that certain DVDs will play clearly for about 5 seconds, then they go very red for about 15 seconds and the cycle repeats.

I think it's the copy protection kicking in, but "experts" have told me that is not the case.

Anyone know what causes that phenomenon?

Hmmm. I laughed my ass off when I went to see it. But I had smuggled some drinks into the theatre too. With some movies you just have to come prepared.

Sony DVD players are notorious for not playing many discs. One major uk electrical goods retailer actually asks if you plan to watch any 'non officially sourced media' (pirates?) and if you say yes they advise you to avoid sony.

Sony is a bitch the world over for less than perfect licences... though a friend of mine said that Kodak Gold burns would work on a Sony.
