Okay, so I finished the movie this evening and I have a few observations from it.
Some background:
I don't recall having read the books or if I did I don't recall them well enough to judge whether the current movie follows the book or not. I also have seen the 1984 film but it has been many years (over 20) since I saw it, so again, I recall very little of it other than it was ponderous and sorta boring.
That being said;
The visuals are fabulous. I watched this on a 60" hi-def screen and in my opinion the cinematography is quite simply stunning. The CGI is (thankfully) not overdone to the point of distraction. It would probably be worthwhile to see this in a theater if that is your thing.
Same opinion of the soundscape. Though I don't have a super high end sound system it is much better than stock TV. Running at a moderate level both the orchestration and sound FX are very good. The dynamics are a bit wider than I was expecting but the differences between soft and louder passages are not disturbing. A bit surprising at times, but overall not terrible. Again this might translate differently in a theater where I know they have the tendency to run the sound levels considerably higher.
The story is not hard to figure out even if you have no experience with the Dune saga. It's pretty straight forward and there aren't a lot of subplots to disseminate. The movie is fairly long at 2hrs 35+min so the pacing isn't really quick but I didn't find it overly slow. Granted I watched it over 2 days as opposed to one sitting.
Overall it seems to be, from my point of view, a decent flick that obviously needs at least a second film to finish what it started and as I understand it that is what they plan since they left this film hanging at the end.
Worthwhile to see, don't know if I would put up the price of admission to see it in the theater, but overall not a complete waste of time.
YMMV
