Dune

I was sorta in the "no reboots. no remakes." camp regarding the film obviously like I am in general. But then some of my people began to get excited about it. Nothing can turn me around on something like genuine enthusiasm. Now, this game of stacking dominoes meets musical chairs the studios are playing? It has to stop. Release these things to the home market already, or explain yourself.
There may not be theaters to open to by the time this is viable again, at least not in the numbers studios are wanting.

I have never seen Dune. This re boot has a cracking cast. The one I'm looking forward to is The Green Knight. Mainly for the fox in it.

Oh great, another sci-fi classic SJW'ed and Mary Sued by Hollywood into being consumable for the masses who weren't able to connect the first 50 years it was around.

I have all of the books.

The '84 version was just on HBO this month.
It looks so much like a Disney movie...

I don't think I have ever seen a movie made from a book that I thought was better than the book. I loved the Dune series even though it got a little crazy in places. I have not seen a movie of it that I cared for much at all. Perhaps I will check out this one. Though it has been a long time since I read the original.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

I was introduced to Dune with Lynch version, loved it.
Then I read the book and was amazed how Lynch actually butchered it. Now I tolerate that version.
The whole Dune saga is one of my favorite reading material. I've read all of the original 6 books about 10 times. They are mindblowing!!!
Miniseries was more faithful to the source material but the acting was "within the budget" with few exceptions.
Now, with this new version... I have high hopes based on what I saw. I don't consider it a reboot but a new adaptation. Book is the original source material and this is new attempt to put it on the big screen. It's not reinvention of Lynch's 1984 film.
And I really hope that Denis Villeneuve will get to make Part 2 and that this film will start the series because the books are just epic!!!!

Would you illustrate a bit about what ways in which it was butchered?

I read Herbert's appendix on "Bene Gesserit Motives and Purposes" without gaining the least insight into Bene Gesserit motive and purposes. What were they planning to do with the Kwizatz Haderach?

I was also unclear on the nature of the extinction that would have taken humanity if God-Emperor Leto had not ruled as he did.

First and most important thing to be said is that David Lynch NEVER read the book and yet he wanted to co-write the script. He changed a lot of things just because he thought it was not important and he had his own idea what the film should be and it shows. You can recognize the core story from the book, it's there but everything that wraps it to have meaning is either missing or changed. That film was fantastic for me when I was a kid but now...
Something like never filmed Yodorovsky version, which could be cool, but would be abomination as well.
Spcae navigators never appear in the first book, they are only mentioned. They first appear in Dune Messiah.
Princess Irulan appears only briefly at the end. Same thing with the Emperor Shadam.
Character of Baron Harkonnen is disgusting, he should be scary and intelligent. You never see that. He is not supposed to fly around like a balloon and those tumors on his face.... The entire House Harkonnen is represented as insane and they are far from that. Important part of the book is Baron's education of his nephew (Sting), even after nephew tries to kill him he teaches him where were his mistakes and how to do it better next time. This should be in Part 2 of new version.
Kyle MacLachlan was too old for the part.
The amount of time people spend talking to themselves is like watching south-american telenovela. I understand Lynch tried to compensate internal monologues that exist in the book but he failed.
Friendship between Duncan Idaho and Paul is non existent.
The whole thing with voice modulator to increase weapon power is Lynch idea
exclusively and that became big part of the final battle.
There was no rain at the end.
Extended edition of the film is slightly better.

And this is just what first fell on my mind.

Kwizatz Haderach was supposed to be their puppet. There are few theories if there were several Kwizatz Haderach throughout the saga or just one.
And on Dune itself the entire legend about savior was implanted throughout population of Dune via Misisonaria Protectiva centuries earlier as a backup plan if they should need it. I think in one of the later books it was told that Dune was not the only planet they did that.

And as for Leto: his actions caused a sort of reset. Even during the time of Paul, fremen started changing ecosystem of the planet which in turn, even during Paul's reign, caused the beginning of extinction of sand-worms, who are crucial for existence of almost everything. Without worms there is no spice and without spice everything collapses. Without any spoilers, lets just say Leto created new type of worms because Arrakis must always remain a desert if humanity is to thrive.

Thank you gunslinger, I appreciate your response. I wonder how much the movie portrayals colored my experience reading the book since I saw the movie first? I should read the book again before the new movie debuts.

edited to add...
The Alan Smithee cuts of the film for me do not work as well as cinematic pieces, but all the additional info really added to my appreciation of what Lynch ended up with. Like, how the various Alan Smithee cuts include the story of the robot uprising, so we now know why a mentat would have a job. And for Lynch's visual world, why many things were so starkly mechanical. And why the navigator warns of new machines on IX. It tickles me that the entire premise of Terminator, is a preamble here.

Excited for this version.

Saw the first version in the Northwest, dead of winter, and they were offering refunds because the heat was broken. Friends and I saw it anyway.

Freezing or asses off in down jackets and stocking caps killed some of the "Desert Planet" vibe but we still really enjoyed it.

Lots of room for improvement though.

The Machine uprising aka The Butlerian Jihad is mentioned several times throughout the book and is important for understanding the Dune universe.
In Lynch version, the scene with the meeting of Emperor and the Navigator does not exist in the book. It may be it was inserted there to show that they are co-conspirators against the Atreides family but it didn't turned exactly right.
The book is so complex that there were some details that I only noticed on my 3rd or 4th read.
I would most definitely recommend it to everybody to read it.
I have an aunt that is all into classical literature and for her SF was something that is for kids and not worth of her time. Somehow I convinced her to read Dune and she loved it. Ended up reading first 3 books in under a month.
