Drugs involved in friendly fire deaths

By Michael Buchanan
BBC correspondent in Washington

Two American pilots accused in a fatal "friendly fire" incident in Afghanistan took amphetamines before it occurred, an enquiry has found.
The pilots were taking the drugs prescribed by the United States military when they killed four Canadians last April, according to US Air Force investigators.

They are awaiting a court martial hearing due to start next month.

The Canadians who died were serving in Kandahar
US Air Force majors Harry Schmidt and William Umbach face up to 64 years in prison following the incident over Kandahar.

The pilots thought they were being fired at and dropped a laser-guided missile on their presumed attackers.

It was only when they had killed four people and injured eight that they were told the group were Canadian soldiers taking part in a night live-fire exercise and that they had informed the US military.

But it has now emerged that about an hour before the incident the two men had taken amphetamines, or speed as it is commonly known, that had been given to them by the US Air Force.

'Go'-pills

The pills, which are illegal in the US, are given to combat pilots who are involved in long eight or nine-hour sorties in small controlled doses, say the military.

The Air Force stopped prescribing the 'Go' pills, as they are known by the pilots, in 1993 after reports that crews using them during the Gulf War became addicted.

But the drug has been quietly reintroduced in recent years.

The Air Force says they are a medical tool that is essential for combat pilots being sent to war over Afghanistan and, possibly, Iraq.

64 years? Yikes!

It was a stupid, thoughtless, fucked up incident - but 64 years in prison? Sheesh!

And how much time will their superiors - who drugged them - get? My guess - about 64 years less.

64 years for being a complete and utter moron just seems a tad bit harsh to me. I guess it was the whole "not following direct orders" thing, eh? Hopefully the next group of dorks that want to drop missiles on people with rifles might think twice.

Unfortunately it won't bring those poor young men back to their families this Christmas.

They weren't being complete and utter morons. I've seen the cockpit tape with audio. These guys acted within training and Rules of Engagement. They fired before the should have. A couple of seconds after the bomb struck the Canadian's. A Voice came over the radio saying (along the lines) "Waive off, friendly target".

They jumped the gun.

They were told not to fire, and they should have known they weren't in danger of being anywhere close to hit. But drugs do fuck up your senses and reactions.

Same thing happend at my college. Muslim students had sticks, rocks and insults thrown at them when they tried to pray outside so now we reserve a room for them in my building.

Ahh a level head.

I hope you have a chance to watch the video. (or have you seen it?) The pilots "felt" in danger, I agree with about 70% of that. The time lapse they were told to stand by and confirmation may have felt like eternity due to the drugs. I hope the people who pushed the drugs on the pilots get double the sentence.

These weren't 24 yo's who just finished watching Top Gun. These were seasoned vets. It's a shame it happened.

My apology isn't an official one Freya. I have trained some Canadians who are/were stationed up at Cold Lake (7 total) I enjoyed their company immensely.

I am truly sorry for what happened.

Well your recent problems have shown that racism is still a big political issue in the States...

It was a friggin mess. The whole shebang really, and while I do believe they need to be punished, I feel 64 yrs is excessive. And yes, their higher ups should be sanctioned as well, but to be fair, these guys took the drugs of their own volition - it's not like it was slipped in their OJ.

But you know damn well that the pilots will be the only ones to take the fall - and whatever happens to them won't bring back those 4 men, or ease the hearts of their parents, wives, fiancees, children. I watched some of the news reports after it happened. The saddest thing I have ever fucking seen was the best friend of one of the victims bringing the engagement ring to the guy's girlfriend. He'd bought it, and had it in his locker, planning on giving it to her in just a few months when he was done over there.

I believe they should be punished. To the max extent also.

The story about the Amphetamines is a conflicted one. Some reports say pilots are prescribed to take them during the flight, some before. Some reports say the pilots are ordered to take them and can't leave the ready room until they have.

If the pilots were forced to take them the superiors should be fried. If they voluntarily took them, it still doesn't excuse the Air Force for having them prescribed to any pilot.

I hope Canada sues the USAF.

way back when, when i was" unregistered" there was a similar thread about this incident. i do not believe those pilots left their morning briefing with the intention of killing members of the canadian armed forces. its quite easy for p_p_man to scream MURDERERS. it is also easy for everyone here to be armchair warriors. what i do know is that a young woman who works for me and who just turned 21 is being called up to active duty. she is a good KID. just like 1000s of others in her situation. for me, it has put a real face on the situation. :(

I'll find you a one legged blind girl to knock down. You can handle her right?
