Do you have erotic dreams? Do they influence your story writing in any way? Does erotic writing influence your dreams?

My dreams are too non-linear and surreal to be much use to me as an inspiration for erotica, and I forget most of them right away after waking, but my experiences with "lucid" dreaming make me want to write an erotic lucid dream story of some kind. It would be interesting to explore a sci fi concept somewhat like that in Inception where two people's lucid dreaming states can merge and they have an erotic encounter.

I have found that since I started writing erotica in 2016 I have more dreams about sex than I used to, and they are much more detailed and life-like than before, which is interesting.

I have nightmares about stories being stuck in pending, or not being what I wrote. Does that count?

Because otherwise, no, I don't think my dreams influence my writing or vice versa - at least not the erotic parts.

I've had a couple of occasions when a (kind of lucid) dream has resolved a plot difficulty I've been struggling with. But I think that's not quite what you're wondering.

Yes, yes, and yes.

And I wrote one that involves co-workers who interact in dreams. She's unaware she can enter the dreams of others, thinks they are normal sex dreams, then meets him and finds out her dreams are so much more than that and she's been unwittingly stealing tiny amounts of life from people through her erotic encounters in dreams. It's called Dancing in a Daydream, but it's not up on here.

I have them but very rarely... which sucks as those usually keep me in some strange but good feeling of arousal for days. They are quite chaotic but very vivid and feel so real.
Damn, I wish I could induce them somehow.

I offer this up as a related tangent, and not a derailment (and maybe a commentary on perhaps spending too much time in the forums):

Twice now, Lit authors have appeared in my dreams (as full fledged beings, although I have zero idea of how accurate my mind has projected them, neither of them, I add hastily, in a physically erotic context.)

I DM'd one of them, who was kind enough to respond, although both of us tiptoed gingerly about it all.

Here's the 'erotic dream':

Setting: some sort of New Age Psychoanalytic Self Optimisation gathering, with about eight or ten attendees.. In the course of the usual ritual (tiresome) introductions (who we are, where we're from, work, hobbies, etc.) I realise that one of the participants is a Lit author, by some subtle reference to being a member of an esoteric online writing group associated with erotica, and with a start I recognise this person. Ha! In the dream I believe I also, less directly, mentioned the same preoccupation.

At a break, away from the group, I grapple with decisions: do I sidle up to this person and introduce myself? Share our indulgence in various written perversions? Do I avert my eyes, play ignorant, and try to get on with my self-optimisation tasks?

Luckily I awoke and didn't have to wrestle with the dilemma anymore.

I consider what I do to be daydreaming. I just looked up lucid dreaming and I still don't know what it means.

The influence of one is felt in the other going both ways. A lot of my writing comes from daydreaming and daydreaming has gotten me out of some sticking points in my stories.

People can learn lucid dreaming and induce such dreams when they want.

What's the research on this?

I find my lucid dreaming tends to happen right before I wake up. There's a very brief period when I am conscious enough to realize I'm dreaming and to have control over what happens in my dream, but almost immediately I then wake up and the sensation is gone. How does one prolong that?

Lucid dreaming occurs when you are asleep and actually dreaming, but you are aware that you are in a dream. You are aware that what is around you is not real. It's a strange, and in a way empowering, feeling, because you realize suddenly that you can act without consequence and that you have a power over your environment that you didn't think you had.

I find, however, that a lucid dream is a kind of frustration dream, because what invariably happens is that the sensation doesn't last long, and shortly after I gain this sense and think, "I'm going to have some fun with this," I wake up.

Lucid dreaming is elusive, and I don't think it is in everyone's experience.

My most memorable lucid dreams were many years ago when I would go flying. (Not in a plane or other aircraft, just me and my body gliding over the earth below.) I had control over where I went, and to some extent how fast I. But the experience was ethereal - in the air, moving over land, seeing sights, weightless and carefree. Never had a sexual dream of that nature.

Difficult to replicate effectively, but there are many techniques to help people try to develop the ability to lucid dream. People with good dream recall are more likely to remember lucid dreams. Learning the techniques can get results anywhere from a few days after practicing to months later, if they are able to develop it at all.

Basically, it's highly dependent on the person.

I learned as a kid to help control nightmares. I made the nightmares worse, so I quit for a long time, lol.

I have excellent dream recall and it usually only takes me a couple of attempts to get back to realizing I'm dreaming in my dreams.

My lucid dreams are almost always sex dreams. My non-lucid ones usually are as well, though, I just don't get to choose who I'm with in those.

Yeah, never had anything like this happen.

Thanks for the explanation. đź‘Ť

My dream recall is very spotty, but I've found that if I think about dreaming as I go to sleep and think about what I want to dream about I'm a bit more likely to dream about that subject, and to remember it. Usually, it's about sex.

Sometimes I think I have "fake" lucid dreaming. I think I'm conscious of being awake in a dream, but I'm not really, and I don't have the control in my dream that I think I do. Sometimes I become conscious that I'm in a dream and I try to will myself awake, but I can't. It feels like sleep is a shroud I can't shake off.

On the few occasions when I experience true lucid dreaming, my thoughts usually turn to sex, but almost always I wake up before anything can happen.

I'm a light sleeper, and I've found that significant stimulus in a dream, whether pleasant or unpleasant, often will wake me up. So, if I'm having either an intense, scary dream or a highly erotic one it's likely I will wake up before anything comes to fruition.

I would love to have more erotic dreams.. or at least more that I remembered.

I wrote one story “Dreams, Drawings, and Panties,” that involves erotic dreams with a Sci-fi Twilight Zone angle. I tried to avoid the “it was only a dream” ending that are a cliche’ with many dream related stories. If anyone is curious, you can get a feel for this story within the first few minutes. It may or may not go the way you expect. I had fun writing what was going on inside someone’s head as he questioned his sanity. This story also deals with the problem where you quickly forget your dreams.

I rarely get erotic dreams, but one of my stories (Magnum Innominandum) started out as an attempt to recapture the emotion of a dream.
