Well, the Mars thing is the thinking of a visionary, thinking in longer terms than the profits his business can earn in his lifetime. There is no physical reason why the human race cannot survive for another 10 billion years -- so long as we don't have all our eggs in one planetary basket. If we ever reach the point where there is a self-perpetuating, breeding human presence off Earth, our species' survival is assured.

A crackpot, perhaps, would be someone who wants to live on Mars and spend the rest of their life sealed in a can, just for some abstraction like "racial survival."
