In the early 2000s Ukraine began to turn toward European democracies. Putin wanted to regain influence over Ukraine by installing a puppet government under Viktor Yanukovych. To accomplish this, they brought in the man who’d managed Republican campaigns since Nixon: Paul Manafort.

Using Manafort’s signature method of demonizing opponents, Yanukovych won the Ukraine presidency in 2010. But his term didn’t go well and he was thrown out in 2014.

Putin then invaded Ukraine and claimed Crimea.

Manafort owed $17 million to allies of Yanukovych and Putin. His friend Roger Stone was advising Trump’s presidential campaign and Manafort joined in to help. Manafort reached out to a Russian oligarch to who he owed millions and asked “How do we use this to get whole?”

The month that Manafort became Trump’s campaign chair, campaign officials met with Russian operatives to discuss ending sanctions against Russia and establishing a pro-Russian republic in regions of Ukraine.

Soon after, Putin ordered hacks of Democratic computer networks and emails were dumped on Wikileaks twice to damage Clinton’s campaign.
