I also .. sorry for the campyness of this..but John Wayne.. not the cowboy..but the man he plays in Donovan's Reef and the Quiet Man.. just has this commanding presence without having to force himself on anyone..

What about David Bowie's character in The Labrynth... and not so much the actor.. while he's one of those "makes me hot".. but the character Edmund Dantes in the Count of Monte Cristo..the character in the book.. the one who gets out of prison is very commanding..

Then you HAVE to see Quiet Man.. with Malinborn out of the house this weekend.. I might just have to watch it.. but he doesnt beat her in front of everyone..but he literally drags her from the train station to a field where her brother is working.. has one of my favorite lines ever.. a little old woman runs up to him with this big stick and says, "Here sir, a nice stick to beat your lady"... again.. I know the scene very well. I have seen that movie about 8 times over my many years.

I love John Wayne movies to watch, and at the same time am troubled by the male modeling problems they have caused several generations of men - but that is fodder for another thread.
 
Just a bit of curiosity after looking through this thread: is this about perceived domliness or perceived "hawtness" - it's a little hard to tell from my perspective.
