The 2nd U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the DOMA unconstitutional. This is the second Circut Court to do so. In this case, the surviving partner in a F/F relationship paid a ton of taxes on what her partner bequeathed to her in her will because they weren't 'married'.

The observer from the outside might think that the US government hasn't got anything better to do that worry about things like DOMA and other 'little' things.
Has the nation got balanced books or a good health system, etc.. ?.

Based on what? Were you thinking that what you read on this forum is representaive of what the U.S. government is worrying about?

There is a direct link between having your marriage recognized and access to health care.

Point taken;
but it also is a result of conversations with some US citizens.

The observer from the outside would be wrong. We have very big things and also smaller things to worry about.

At the very same time.

Again, do you get your "publicity" from everywhere? Where you look determines what issues you're going to hear about.

The three weeks I was just in the UK, all I heard about in the media was a little girl in Wales missing, torrential rains collapsing building foundations, surfacing of sleazy sex behavior by some of your past comedians, and Andy Williams dying. So, is that all you in the UK are interested in?

It's not just the Americans that are worrying about the Americans.

I love you guys! We all do!

(Could you please let us win the Stanley Cup once in a while though?)

Valid point.

I'll counter with something I posted here a few days ago.

On Yahoo's trending now. #1 was Miley Cyrus new Tattoo, #4 was a Justin Bieber tweet. The debate was number 10.

There is a frighteningly large percentage of people in the US who don't know which candidate supports birth control, but they can tell you which Kardashian is dating which celebrity.

How come the 'little' things (relatively), get all the publicity

I don't see this as little.

This is a big step in getting rid of the bullshit insurance companies and other industries pull to try to save a fucking dollar and screw somebody out of money and trying to justify it by using some equally bullshit moral stance.

No one, not man, not man's alleged god and certainly not a bunch of ass wipes sitting on their high horse should determine who a person has a right to love.

things like well in the eyes of the law this woman was not.....

Yeah, whatever.

Little things?

I don't know if that's true.

I think a LOT of people know BOTH which candidate supports women's rights, AND which kardashian is dating which celebrity.

The two are not incompatible.

Why don't you use your Canadian magic to get us a season first, and then we can chat about the Cup? ;)

Not a valid comparison.

If I want to learn about the debates, I can open just about any online news source and find updates (or turn on NPR, or turn on the shouting matches that are cable news, etc). No need to search for it.

But if I want to see whether the no-more-martini James Bond rumors are true, I need to search for it.

And for the record, today's searching informs me that it's totally and depressingly true. It appears that my beloved gin has been kicked to the curb in favor of . . . Heineken. Seriously.

It is a valid point. The trending now is based on what people are "hitting on" so even if its only through yahoo it shows that more people wanted to see Hannah Montana's new tattoo then what the hell is going on in the presidential race.

People don;t want to hear all that "gloom and doom" they want to watch American Idol and play farmville then complain when this country is falling apart,

Take a poll Stella, seriously. Start asking some people random questions.

Now I don't mean people you are close to who are most likely similar to you, but go to a starbucks and find some of the younger crowd (twenties or so) start asking. You'll be surprised.

But it's got to be Gordons. . . .
You have my sympathy.

I've talked to hundreds of people this year, face-to-face, in a radius about four hundred miles. Thousands via the internet.

How about you?

Arguing about the relative nature of DOMA's importance vs. other problems is a logically fallacy. It implies that we can't concern ourselves with both (which we can) and that DOMA is minor, which, compared to a bunch of people sick and dying might be true, but that's something of a false comparison, yes? This is a question of equal rights under the law and that is certainly important. As important as civil rights have always been, be it the right of women to vote or people not to be discriminated against because of the color of their skin.

I especially don't think we should let this thread be side-tracked that way rather than cheering the fact that a bigoted law is finally being taken to task and judged un-lawful. This is something to cheer about even if it's not as big or important as some other things.

Finally.

As far as politics right now, I just have friends who are so sick of hearing about it that they stick their heads in the sand and refuse to think, act, or vote.

My absentee ballot is sent. Obama, Klobuchar, No, and no.
