It was belived to be a cure for the "Common Cold". or rather a preventative measure. Everyone would have a mouse in the late autumn and any time they felt a cold comming on.

Only they weren't originally made of suggar.

The suggar was just to help the kid swallow it.

I know at least one old lady who was regularly given a mouse when she was young.
