Does the rest of the world realize the USA doesn't live in the 19th Century?

Oh right. What's next, a flying car?

Like THAT'll ever happen.

Oh yeah, there have been threads about that too.

Oh well.

Yeah right.

Next you'll be telling me that the cowboys ride pickups instead of horses.

I've seen the films. You still use steam trains too.

Umm, didn't we have a millenium party to celebrate leaving the 20th century?

What I want to know is, how come Mothra and Godzilla's other enemies only attack Japan? What did they ever do to them?

LOL

Oh, and Americans don't really wear hats that look like cheese or paint their faces when they go to sporting events. That's just the media trying to make us look silly.

Good reason to celebrate.

The 20th century officially began January 1st 1901. Due to the mass media swinging a 300 year old argument it ended December 31st 1999. So it only lasted 99 years.

Despite being a cut price century it was pretty much the worst in terms of violence and inhumanity.

Well worth celebrating its end I think.

It was also a century that brough unimagineable technological advances. And how does one measure inhumanity, exactly?

All twenty-somethings live in city apartments. And you really don't want to be an American cop with 24 hours to retirement too.

Numbers of people brutally massacred for no reason other than they're different, perhaps?

No doubt the denizens of the late 19th century thought the same of theirs. Technology has a way of having a proportional impact on the population, regardless of time period.

Are you referring to the Protestant/Catholic hatred?

People have been massacred for being different throughout human history. Is it a greater wrong to massacre a thousand people than one hundred?

How can you compare the two, simply in terms of absolute numbers?

Killing people is one thing, all out genocide is another. I'm talking Hitler/Stalin/Mao here.

Not just conquest for power or land or whatever.

Of course its gone on for centuries, but last century was, imho, horrific by comparison because of the technology. If The Spanish Inquisition could have used ZX gas and shipped non-catholics from all over Europe then taht would have been on a par with Hitler

You can't compare the two. Genghis Khan used the horse to conquer and slaughter thousands at a time when there were less than 50 million in the world, if that.

Each was horrific in its own right. Each used the means in hand to pursue their goals.

True, there have been powerful murdering bastard dictators since time began. I guess its just because I know so much about the 20th century's villains that i said it was more horrific.

Khan conquered for land (i would have thought) and domination. Hitler killed Jews because they were Jewish. Not somethin i really want to compare, to be honest

way beyond.........

Yeah, we also got this thing called a "Shuttle" that flies in space, and we've been to the "Moon" and out of the solar system, and developed communication satellites, and these things called "computers", and a magical place called "Internet." How come other countries don't do what we've done? Who really dwells in the 19th century, than those that think government is the answer to the problems of stupid people. That is more repressive than all the concentration camps combined, to restrict peoples freedom to do what is best for themselves, without government interference, but freedom is scary to the weak of character. :D

You really think Hitler was going to give up all of his conquered territory and return to the pre-war borders of Germany once every Jew in Europe had been exterminated?

Never thought him to be a benevolent Nazi.
