Does anyone use Skype here?

I need a cheapish method of calling my friends across the pond and have downloaded Skype

Has anybody had any problems with it? Is it worth getting a dedicated headset or will using my mic and headphones be okay?

I used it for a short time (twice) with a couple of people. Didn't ever fall in love with it though.

Headset worked fine, but I suppose mic + headphones would work fine as well. I would suggest against mic + speakers though, as feedback becomes a problem.

Skype is fantastic, I use it all the time. Headset and mic will work, if your mic is sensitive enough. Of course you can always boost it via the sound panel.

There are all kinds of add ons you can download, one two allow you to video conference up to 7 people, and audio conference up to 200 people.

There is an add on that will allow you to broadcast music at the same time you are talking...background music if you will.

There are even answering machines you can add on.

In the end I didn't decide to use it, my friend couldn't get it to work on her PC and so I made a voice call on MSN messenger which worked great

West coast American accents have never sounded more cuter

:D

hey sweetie. you can use it to call land lines too so if someone doesnt have a computer, you can still access them.

what i didnt like about it was i couldnt walk away from the computer. i was locked in by the cord. but other than that, it seemed to work just fine.

We found that Yahoo's voice program worked better, but all three were shaky. There's amazing potential there (cheap calls for calling phones, free for computers), but you still have to put up with crap. The best thing about it is the way someone's voice sounds in headphones. It makes you feel like you're there (making phone sex much more interesting :D ).

I'm finding British accents particularly captivating at the moment. I have to find ways to keep these lovely ladies talking to me...the accents make me weak in the knees.

you can get a bluetooth headset/mic for your computer or a cordless handset. ;)

The sound quality is better than the regular phone as the landline/cellphone network clips the sound on the low and high sides to reduce bandwidth, voip doesn't.

If you have dsl or cable the quality of Skype/yahoo/msn is excellent. If you try to use it on dialup there will be lag time and bit dropouts and such.

I have had up to five people conferenced at one time with, they were all on broadband, no problems.
