preferably free (which is a contradiction in terms probably)
What was your problem with Nord? I've found it excellent.None of the decent ones are free.
None of the free ones are decent.
I used NordVPN for 2 years, had a lot of issues with it.
I switched over to ExpressVPN ($100 per year) and I'm happier than a Vetteman in shit.
ExpressVPN allowed me to download torrents of Game of Thrones without issue.
Plus one license works on laptop, iPhone and iPad. It also has a Chrome extension.
I highly recommend it.
oh and if you do go with ExpressVPN, send me a PM, you and I both get 30 extra days free.

looking like its a paid one then. looking at Nord, express and cyberghost, not sure which yet or if it'll interfere with my less than legit sky digi box (some providers get iffy about VPNs)
I got a cease-n-desist notice from my ISP for downloading a movie torrent VIA NORDVPN.....then I got a sternly worded email from NORD stating that torrenting was against their terms of service. I was like WTF?
Weird. Nord has dedicated p2p servers.

Don't use free VPNs, they make their money by selling your data.
I use Nord. The three year deal will cost you about £82.

You had something else going on. VPN's shouldn't be used with tor (which you probably weren't using to torrent anyway) and shouldn't be paired or anything. It's surprising what can come back to bite you even with a VPN just cuz you did or didn't do some little thing that seemingly has nothing to do with it.
And don't leave your torrent crap on. When the VPN fails, you'll get a letter.
Oh yeah and you gotta be a dick when it comes to new torrents. Download and GTFO. Make up for it later with older torrents if you feel guilty about it.
I have a few servers. One is constantly hooked up to the VPN, I use that for "fun" and then transfer it to the NAS for Plex.
I have a server I run for everything legit. I have a dedicated laptop for less kosher things and keep it constantly going on a VPN but I've slipped a few times here and there and so am extra careful these days and never leave shit running.
I'd like a server just for clandestine activities but have not been able to justify the cost yet. Soon I think.
I use an old HP that I installed a 250gb SSD on with a 1tb drive for storage. That's all on my mom's office network. Then I transfer content to the NAS and fix the filenames and add the "posters". My shit is better than Netflix.
And don't leave your torrent crap on. When the VPN fails, your mom will l get a letter.

Agreed. And I was using one of them (although they are extremely slow during US evening hours...go figure)
Nord has a kill switch. When the vpn fails it disconnects from the interweb.
