i stated in an earlier post that about 25 of my brothers, sisters and their broods just left after a great weekend of celebration....even though the house and yard are cleaned i need to reclaim the serenity that i usually enjoy here...

some years ago i adopted the native american tradition of smudging...i.e. lighting a bundle of sage or sweetgrass and spiritually cleansing my home and myself with the smoke...like many spiritual/religous ceremonies the comfort for me comes in the performance, the slow deep breathing and the prayer ritual that is a part of it...

at any rate my question is this, does anyone else perform this type of cleansing and do any of you from a country other than the u.s. have similar ceremonies in your country...if any aussies are tuned in i'd be particularly interested in whether or not the aboriginals have something like this...

I do. I usually mix sage and lavender and burn it for awhile all through the house. Especially if people I do not care for have been over. Helps me get rid of the negative energies they leave behind. And it helps me feel like my mind is clean and relaxed of hassling thoughts.

I burn incense daily. For my ancestors and stinky poo-poo...

Good timing here!

Lately I have been thinking that I need to smudge my house. However I dont know where to buy Sage or sweetgrass around here. Are there anyplaces ovet the net? I have not looked yet, I just thought of that. I do know of a place that is over an hour away from here, but I am kinda lazy ya know....:D

We sit around and smoke mull and drink fosters.
We leave the doors open so the mull smoke floats through the backyard to where the 'roos and koalas roam and sit back and giggle at their stoned antics.

No shit.

Well, for whatever it is worth, I do smudge.

I have sage that I burn throughout my house once a week or anytime I feel too much negative energy around me.
I burn it inside an abalone shell.

My mother is the one that taught me about this, as she is a practicing Native American.

yes, there are quite a few sites that sell sage bundles and sweet grass braids...if you type smudging into a search engine you should find all you need...i'm lucky, i've got good friends that own a store here in town that sell all of it and i live in a part of texas where i can take two steps off of my front porch and pick cedar to burn if i'm out of sage....

I will not even smoke a Marlboro in my house, more less burning dried weeds in your home. That is very different. Why not use Lysol?

i can't tell if your question is serious or not but i'll answer it as though it were....i don't smoke either and haven't for a lot of years...smudging is not about covering odors or physically cleaning the house...it's about ridding the house of negative energy....it's a ritual cleansing of your home and yourself...if i have a really negative customer in my store i'll smudge there after they have left to maintain a positive feeling there...

the smell of sage is very pleasant to me and dissipates fairly quickly so it's not like having a chain smoker fouling up your air...

anyway, it's something i like to do and am glad to see that there are others that enjoy the benefits as well..

I'm in need of BIG bulk sage... (only PARTIALLY in humor)

I use either sage, sometimes blended with sweetgrass, sometimes not, or homemade incense that I blend. Also for cleansing and purification, salt and water.

My parents are coming out here for two WEEKS the end of this month. My dad comes out every year for several days to visit his mother and me :) but this time he's bringing my mom. For the whole two weeks. She be the reason I moved a thousand miles away 14 years ago. She and I have only seen each other four times since I moved out, though we chat (sort of) on the phone once a month (<-- this is strictly enforced by my dad who has to hear it from her if she doesn't hear from me, it's supposed to be a weekly call). It goes more along the lines of her repeating everything she's said for the past kazillion phone calls (mainly that she does not approve of any life choice I have made or am making or will be making any time in the future), and I put the phone down and play with my cat until my mom runs down. Then dad and I can chat for a few minutes before we hang up.

She THINKS she's bedding down here at my place. Um...I guess that's why I have a lock on my front door :D

*repeats mantra ad nauseum, "You're a full grown woman, she cannot control you anymore, and you CAN tell her no and kick her ass out of your own home if you so choose."* *tapes mantra to forehead*

heh Yes, I WILL be making a trip to our local metaphysical shop in the next week.

My mom means well, I'll give her that, and she's very polite to strangers and people outside the immediate family, only she lives in her very own little universe of what is "right" (her) and what is "wrong" (everyone else), and is bound and determined to fix all wrongs. If you've ever seen the TV show, "Everybody Loves Raymond", mom is a perfect cross between Raymond's mother, Marie, and Endora from "Bewitched"...on crack.

My poor cat will be hiding in the cupboard under the bathroom sink for two weeks...probably three, just to make sure they're gone.

Thanks for the info UncleJ. I look forward to doing some shoping here very shortly!! (My house is in need indeed!)

WhiteRose, could you be my Ex wife? Her mom was just as you described yours. (oh wait, it was I who had a problem with her, not my wife. Thats right, she liked to be controlled and to blindly do what her mom and dad told her.)

Ok so you cant be her. Best of luck to you thogh! I will send happy thoughts your way.

hehe Thanks! I'll need them :)

I do cleansings with sage occasionally, though not as often as I should. I'm a lazy witch :) I'm a big fan of energy absorbers and stuff like that... passive cleansing rather than active.

You pour thing.....your mom sounds like my dad.....I can hardly stand being around him for extended periods of time.

Back to the thread question......yes I like to clense my house of the negative energies with sage and sweetgrass as well.....plus I like to burn insense every now and then.....

perkie, if we were hippies we'd be dressin' in jeans and t-shirts..we'd have long hair..we'd have bongs on the coffee table......hmmmmnn...ok, you win....

I use sage when my house is feeling particularly nasty and swwet grass for consecration- I use a sage and cedar blend for house clearing- in other peoples houses- and I use a sage and tobacco blend to cleanse my ritual circle and as an offering to the great spirit and elemental spirits that have been invited to the ritual.

Sorry, I am not old enough to be a hippie.

Just have studied a few shamanistic things over the years.

clearing my home of evil

Parents, brothers and sister, bible thumpers and friends that are users, they all bring a haze of themselves that needs to be whoosed (is that a word) away, and while sage, sweet grass, cedar and things you mentioned may work for you, I have my own little ritual to make them be gone ..... I fart ;)

if farting is the method you use then the word you were looking for is whooshed not whoosed...

chantal, age is not a requirement for hippiedom...it helps but it's not mandatory....one of my best friends is a stone cold hippie and he's only 32...it's all about attitude and lifestyle...
