Do you write a story, then not really like it?

Do you ever write a story, then when it is complete or almost finished, you look at it and not really care for the results.

I am not talking about not liking it because of silly plots, poor characterization, and other technical aspects. I am talking about the story itself.

Recently, for some reason, I have been interested in the "cheating wife" type stories. So I went and wrote one, had someone look it over then polished it up a bit.

Now looking at it, I am not sure what I think. In real life I find this behavior totally unacceptable and wrong. There is nothing erotic about it. Maybe I am reading to much into it, it is just a fantasy story. I have thought about just deleting the silly thing or changing the ending a little so it is not what it seems, or just posting it the way it is.

Am I just being wierd or do other writers sometime go through this? Just curious.

Yes. All the time. That's why I don't have many stories posted at Lit yet. I have many "near finished" (in my book) stories on disk and my hard drive. I even have several printed up, the pages stapled together, and tucked away in my writing binder. Why aren't they at Lit? Because I don't like them. Or, even if they are "finished", to me there's always something I can add or improve on in them.

I have had this happen to me with a few things I began writing. The idea seems so good until I get about half way through it. Then I look at it and realize I don't care for it. Usually the reason is because I don't think readers will believe the plot. I usually just set it aside and see if I can come up with a revision that makes it believeable.

It's somewhat difficult to write cheating wives stories, IMO. Typically, when a spouse cheats, the result is not good. There are not many happy endings. It can be difficult to come up with an erotic plot and make it work with the readers as far as being believeable.

A few authors do well with cheating wives plots. I think tonytony has a new story posted here today. I have not read it yet, but he usually handles this topic wonderfully. KK is another author that writes very entertaining and hot stories about cheating wives. There are other great authors too that write about cheating wives, so I hope I don't offend by not mentioning them as well.

Yo

I have a bunch of unfinished stuff, like most authors on Lit I suspect.

I'm not over concerned once a story is finished, I always look at my stuff and think it's crap, so I just post it and risk being damned. If I didn't I'd never post anything.

But I do get half way through a tale sometimes and suddenly realise it's rubbish or it won't go any further, so it gets filed.

Cheating anybody is difficult to make a romantic tale out of, as some have said, the act of cheating screws up any love story before you get going.
I have done a cheating wife/husband tale, (they were both at it, I hate blaming the woman all the time), it had to wind up as a swinging couples affair in the end in order to inject some love into it as well as bloody hot sex. They both admitted their sins and lived happily ever after screwing about with permission sort of thing.

Unfinished stories......

Every writer has them. The thing is what to do with them. Personally, I keep them for those times when I get writer's block elsewhere. Say a few months, weeks, or years down the line. by then I have a whole new look, and can edit out what I don't want, and add what I do want. As far as cheating wives stories goes, be realistic. How would you like it if your wife started cheating on you, or if your the wife, how would you feel if that bastard husband began cheating on you?

True Story:

A friend of mine came home to find his wife in bed with the guy who always worked on their car. The guy was actually porking his old lady in his bed when he opened the door and caught them. Both the wife and the guy jumped up to get dressed, but by then my friend had turned away to go sit in the front room with his hand in his coat pockets. They came out of the bedroom, and joined him in the front room where upon my friend said:

"Sorry to break in, but it's still a buck twenty five," and this from a former green baret mind you.

The guy fumbles around in his pockets for a minute, but finally puts a dollar, and a quarter on the coffee table before hightailing it out of dodge. Of course the wife is in tears, and crying the whole time, but now her curiosity is arroused, so she asks:

"What's that for?"

"The dollar is to be framed and put up over our bed, and when your mother, or father sees it you can tell them how you earned your first buck in bed," he said, then picked up the quarter, and flipped it to her with his thumb adding; "This two bits is for you. You earned it."

Now granted most husbands wouldn't have had the presence of mind, or cool interior of my friend, and might just as well have shot the both of them in the heat of maddened passionate jealousy. But sometimes real life is more quirky than fantasy. I understand that they are enjoying their 25th wedding aniversary this year. And yes, the buck is still in a frame over their bed. The wife wears the quarter as a pendant with a fine gold chain around her neck, and hasn't cheated again since. You see, in life, as in war, my friend knew that shit just sometimes happens.

I think we all go through it, even with stories we do like.

Concerning cheating wife stories, it obviously helps to be an unattached outside party looking in. We see a couple, who otherwise lead normal and happy lives. It turns out thought that one has a streak arise in them, and they act on it. Whether they get caught or not, it's hot to hear and imagine being on the rewarding side of such an endeavor.

As people already pointed out, cheating is rarely a good thing. Guilt ridden relationships result, and that's if they're just going out on dates. If they're married, much less with children, it obviously becomes much worse. I needn't delve into how divorce can tear apart an otherwise healthy family structure.

Still, it is the neglected nature of humanity to achieve that taboo high that possesses people to do such acts. I think it's what the best written stories touch upon in each of us who read them that elicit such a response. Consider the diversity of categories here alone. Anal, group, 'loving wives', incest, transgender, gay, mature, etc...

To each their own. I have no problems reading incest stories (except gay ones - I just can't get into homosexual stories), but I would never commit such an act. The idea of meeting up with an attractive but negelcted wife excites me, but if I were actually faced with the possibility, I would likely decline it.

Ulitmately, it's up to you. It's something you're going to share with the internet world - and feedback will reflect this. My one story here so far utlizes candle wax - something I have never tried yet. The feedback I received asking me where else I poured it or what other devices I used genuinely surprised me.

For the record - as I (believe I) wrote - I liked your story. It had a well paced build up, leading to the wife, and the reader, to get excited by the male's sudden forwardness. I did feel it rushed a bit at the end, but it added to the aspect that she wanted to be under his spell.

As I mentioned in my feedback - touch it up a bit, even if you're uneasy about it. Sit on it for a while if you must, but try to find some editors who would be willing to look at your story. Get their feedback. I think it will prove invaluable to helping you decide what actions to take concerning your story.

Often when I get an idea for a story it comes to me with an image, a tableaux in my mind's eye that gets me thinking. One day just such an image popped into my head, a picture of a beautiful girl, nude and wearing a blindfold. lying back in a comfortble chair while a man knelt with his head between her legs. She was smiling, enjoying herself, but surrounding her and the man were a tight ring of masked, malevolent spectators.

I'm sure part of the idea came to me because I'd seen "Eyes Wide Shut". But then I started thinking about it and I set the scene in a fraternity house, with the brothers watching and the woman receiving oral pleasure the former girlfriend of one of the men watching. This part came from a friend of mine whose roommate went through a similar humiliation, having sex in a frat house not knowing that nearly 25 people were watching them.

The story became a harsh, sadistic revenge fantasy, quite unlike the other stories I've written. I meant it to be harsh and sadistic, and I didn't mean for the reader to empathize with the frat guys. It didn't score very well, and I got a lot of nasty mail about it, accusing me of being a misogynist and a elitist pig.

In the end, I don't think I made it perfectly clear what I was trying to do. It isn't that I don't like the story, I think it's pretty good, and very erotic. But if the reader comes away with the exact opposite reaction you intended, you might not have done as good a job as you wanted.

I usually suffer a sort of post-writing letdown when I get to the end of a project. Particularly a long, involved one like a novel. By the time I get to "The End," I'm filled with insecurity and worry that maybe it wasn't as good as I thought.

What I do is set it aside for a while -- a month or two for novels -- and then go back and look at it with fresh eyes.

Thanks for all the comments, I guess I was in a odd mood when I posted this. Going back over the story, I still like it and hopefully will be ready to post it soon and hear what others think.
