One of the ballot measures that Oregon will be voting on in the up-coming election is regarding labeling of food.

It requires all food that has been bioengineer or genetically altered to be labeled as such by farmers, grocers and restaurants.

What do you think?

I think that it should be labeled so that people who want to avoid those foods can do so. I myself would eat them...no paranoia. I am waiting for irradiated foods to take off as well. Bug-free food will be a great thing for this country.

I read that 75% of produce is bioengineered in some way...

I personally don't care if my food is bioengineered or not. If it's labeled that's cool, and I'll still eat it same as always, if not it's all the same.

With all the chemicles and stuff they spray on the food already to keep the bugs away, and what everelse they currently spray for, I can't but think that it's already chemically changed in some way shape or form, so it really woulden't be that big of a stretch (IMO) if it said it was bioengineered. People already miracle-grow their garden tomatoes, why not a few more chemicles?

most foods now adays are bioengineered....even fruits and veges are enhanced...why you can buy a 10 pound peach;)

We received a letter from our Agricultural University saying that it is totally unnecessary and will cost the business people too much.

We now have organic foods and they are labelled.

I like to have a choice. Not that we will really get a choice as there is limited organic...

I want to know what is in my food. Labelling sounds like a brilliant idea.

Sorry, But This One's Over Already

Maybe one day the "naturally" grown foods will be labled, not the frankenfoods, because our friends at Archer Daniels Midland Corporation (Grocers to The World) have already ensured that most seeds and feeds are already engineered.

And the Regulators took care of the rest years ago as well....Free Range Eggs, for example, do not involve chickens running free. The grain not growing in a cage is enough to qualify.

It's already too late.

Did you note that I am from Oregon? We have a number of store chains that sell organic. I have a friend who gardens organic all year on a compost pile garden. In the city.

They sell dozens of pill bottles, too.:)

I agree with labeling.

You can pretty much presume you've got something on your fruits and veggies by the time you get it. Some things have become mandatorily labeled (i.e. sulfites, peanut) because of an incidence of life-threatening allergy associated with it. As GMO foods become more common and in use for a longer period of time how are we going to know if a trend of responses to it exists if we can not even identify whether or not the food that seems responsible is GMO or not.

If you want to avoid as much GMO and otherwise treated produce as possible, wash and dry all your fruits and veggies well and buy organic whenever you can. Even better, support your local organic farmers market.

Organic food in New Zealand is becoming more and more popular.

Back to the original post. I think we have a right to know what is in our food or if it has been bioengineered or genetically altered.

Then I can choose if I want myself or my family to eat that product.

No, I am not paranoid. But I do like to know what I am
putting in my body.

on one spectrum people want their veal milk fed and kept in 2 foot cages, Tuna free dolphin on wheat, and now bioengineering labels.

I suggest you eat what you want, if the companies don't make money they will change for the dollar.

I don't really care.

If science can perfect the food I eat, well that's just swell.

That's what Certified Organic is about.
