Condit: The Noose Tightens
John LeBoutillier
Tuesday July 10, 2001
It should be getting harder for Gary Condit to swallow this morning.
The Feds are clearly circling him – and getting ready to escalate the pressure.
1) The ‘Flight Attendant” – Anne Marie Smith - and her lawyer are jetting into Ronald Reagan National Airport today to sit down with the US Attorney. That means that this will ultimately be a Federal case.
It also means that the US Attorney may be eyeing an indictment for obstruction of justice. That indictment would enable authorities to really get a total look at Condit: phone records, bank records, search his car and any cars he may have borrowed and search his apartment.
Even though Abbe Lowell says that Condit will turn over anything the cops/Feds ask for, you can bet your bippy that he will fight hard not to turn over anything incriminating.
For example, we now learn that right up to last week Condit has been on the phone to Anne Marie urging/begging/threatening her not to cooperate with authorities. Does this sound like someone ready to "cooperate fully” with the investigation?
2) Her latest revelation that Condit is "into” deviant, auto erotic sex only makes him more likely to be involved in Chandra Levy’s disappearance.
3) Which brings us to the case of Joyce Chang. You may recall that in May, when Chandra’s disappearance first made the news, there were stories about Chang’s disappearance from the same neighborhood two years ago. Her brother led a candle light vigil for his late sister, whose body was found months after her disappearance floating in the Potomac River. No one has ever been arrested in this case.
This case was briefly mentioned on Meet The Press on Sunday. But, it turns, out Chang was also an intern. She worked for Congressman Howard Berman – also a Democrat from California.
Could it be that Condit knew Chang?
Could there be a serial killer in the House?
Are the Feds trying to link these two cases?
4) Despite the TV chatter about the so-called ineptitude of the DC cops on this case, there is now so much media attention that the investigating authorities are totally focused on this case.
5) And, if the Bush/Ashcroft Justice Department has its act in gear, they should smell blood in the water here. If the truth forces Condit to resign his seat, the GOP can win it in a special election. That district has a conservative bent and has been Condit’s only because of his long career there. But in a House with a tiny majority for the Republicans, every seat counts. Picking up that seat – in a state now completely dominated by the Democrats – would be a great coup for the Republicans.
6) The Chandra Levy Case also is a marvelous example of the power of the media – especially the three all-news cable networks. Led by the Fox News Channel, the cable nets have propelled this case into the hearts and minds of millions of Americans who otherwise would never have heard of Chandra or Condit. Even the three broadcast networks – slow to get going on this story – have lately joined the fray.
If this case is ever to be solved, it will be because the media forced it down the throats of a reluctant, lazy, diffident and indifferent law enforcement establishment in Washington.
Let us all pray for Chandra – and for the truth.
