My mothertongue is Finnish. And since we have two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, I have studied Swedish in school. But I'm not really any good at that, my English is better and I use it quite a bit more too. I've also studied German and French, but I can only really recall very few words of either. It's one of those things I always mean to get around to...

English is obligatory at school for children from 8 till you get out of school.

we have English from 4th year in school and Swedish, Norwegian, German, French in varying degrees. Even a week or two with Finnish!
Then there's Italian and Spanish and a smattering of Russian.

First language is french, I wrote and read well in english, I speak it too but with a big french accent!!!

I'm a language geek, actually. Fluent in two, reading knowledge of about four others, two of which I can speak a little. I do mean a little. Anybody else out there ever learn a language where they made you memorize set phrases so that years later, you can say "I would like some hankerchiefs" with a perfect accent but have no real ability to speak the language whatsoever?

Not at all for me. I just wish I'd known someone who spoke it to converse with them.

I've taken Spanish, Italian, and Russian...but I can't converse in them. I can read some. None of the russian though. I plan on taking more Spanish in school soon.

I'm learning Greek right now though. I love listening to my friend and her parents banter back and forth. I can't wait till I understand all of what they are saying.

I can read French and get by as a tourist, but couldn't converse in a very meaningful way. Working on it, though. Hey if Mr Keen's company opens that Paris office they've been talking about, our name's in the ring for transfer...

I'd love to learn Italian, too.
