We had a guy come into the clinic yesterday--after I saw his x-ray, I nearly fell out--this guy was maybe 40 but hist lung clearly show emphysema. It is not my role to diagnose and certainlynot my role to be telling patients what I see, but I felt that I had to with this guy.
I asked him how many packs he smokes a day..his answer?

I suggested that he cut down to 2 and ask the doc about the prescription drugs to help quit.

When he came out of her office, I asked him what she said--he told me that she said, "You have emphysema and you will die horribly if you do not cease now. " He had a script in his hand. I told him to be sure to tell his girlfriend the diagnosis so that she could nag him about it if he doesn't do a major cut down.

I have never smoked--was always too cheap with my money to see blowing it that way.

I feel pretty sorry for that guy and wonder how successful he will be in improving his lung health.

Smokers, if your lungs are so bad off that the "accessory" people in your doctor's office comment--take it as a sign from God, please.

I don't smoke most of the time.... once in a long while if I'm at the bar (although there's enough second hand smoke to go around). I don't like the smell, or the headaches it gives me. When I get home, I have to jump in the shower right away!

My ex-in-laws once told me what they spent on cigarettes for a month. There are four smokers in the family...his mother, father, sister and her husband.

I was floored! I could have made a car payment and still had enough to go out to a nice dinner....

I started smoking at age 19. I was certainly old enough to recognize the risks and the definite negatives to smoking. I was in a serious relationship with a hard core alcoholic and, while I didn't drink....I started smoking casually to occupy my time in the bar babysitting him.

15 years later, I can only reminisce about that relationship as it only lasted five years. However, I still have the cigarette in hand to remind me of him.

I put them down about 3 weeks ago. But I couldn' t do it on my own. I used Zyban to get me started. It blocks the part of the brain that craves nicotine. The only problem with it, is that you go around craving something, you're just not sure what it is. It also can cause Insomnia which is something I didn't need, but have managed to get past. But I do miss them, I didn't know you could talk on the phone, drive and drink coffee without them.

Yup I smoke...about half a pack a day.

Strated when I was 13, never put them down since.
I'll tell you what, I know all the dangers about smoking, I know that it shortens my life, and I know its bad for you.
BUT I have no desire for quitting, hey I love my smokes, and feel damn good about it. Why would I quit something I love to do??

I quit my two pack-a-day habit 5 years ago, but even now the smell of cig smoke outside brings back the urge. I'm a true junkie, but I'll never smoke again.
