However:

Supporting the US in Afghanistan and Iraq has and is costing this country a significant part of our GDP as well as our soldiers' lives. The financial cost has to be paid for from taxation.

The cost in blood? All we can do is be thankful that our troops are prepared to fight for us and remember the payment they have made and are still making for our country.

Whether we supported the war and the continuing conflicts or not is irrelevant. We are paying for both. Our troops are paying with a different currency.

You know, Og, thas a little cynical, I think.

There was a time, not that long ago, when 'the sun never sets on the British Empire...'

In many cases it was the Englishman who brought freedom and relief to oppressed people.

I rather think there are many in GB today who would see the 'coalition' formed with other free nations to liberate Kuwait in the 90's, Afghanistan and Iraq, as acts of national pride.

I think you are doing more than 'supporting America', in combatting terrorism around the world, I think you are continuing a national heritage.

You might show a little pride in it, especially as an 'elder patriarch'.

I was leaving space for those who are for and against the war in Iraq.

For me personally:

Am I proud of my country's actions?

For liberating Kuwait? Yes, but why didn't we allow the troops to finish the job properly?
For liberating Afghanistan from the Taleban? Yes.

But for the invasion of Iraq for WMDs that didn't exist? Our electorate were lied to. Period. The justification in the UK for that war was based on a lie. Whether it was justified on other grounds? We don't know. Our troops fought and died and continue to die for a lie.

Now that we are in Iraq we will stay to finish the job. Our troops will try to ensure that Iraq has the chance to rebuild itself as a peaceful country. I am proud of what the troops have done and are doing. I am ashamed of my government for lying to us.

I was waiting for your input Gauche. You are the one person on the board who I know disagrees with just about every opinion that I hold. And we've had some fairly good dicussions from that starting point as well.

Yes, ami, that's me.

Young-ish, opinionated, intelligent, and either informed or able to do enough research to become informed - the person that's gotten you to admit more than once that the views you post tend to run to extremes and your views are slightly closer to center than you would have most believe.

Uh... I have to admit for the most part I don't actually pay attention to the substance of anyone's beliefs here.

It sounds to me like you're a fairly normal on your views...

"Yay... FREE MARKET!!! Too bad I wouldn't trust anyone when we rip the rules out."

I mean historically speaking... human being have proven they're not really into the whole 'brotherhood of man' thing... it's just too easy to avoid the whole issue by saying "Oh... no, you misunderstood, I meant the Brotherhood of WHITE men." (Or LATIN men... or MALE men... or BLACK men...)

Realistically, I can't blame you... if you ripped out the rules, and I could bend you over a barrel, I would lubricate if I were you because you're going to end up over the barrel.

But that's just me... and I'm not as civilized as most people, or enlightened.

Sincerely,
ElSol
