Do you feel weird to get the message "So&So has added your story to a Reading List"

I just logged in, went to My Home - All Activites, and saw this message:
So&So has added your story to a Reading List'.

I got this weird image in my mind. I picture someone pushing books away books by Melville, Salinger, Hemingway, Jack London, Theodore Dreiser, Edgar Allen Poe, etc...and reading a story of mine. I wanted to shout, "Dude, this is porn! Enjoy it, but I hope you have some of the classics on your Reading list!

I see that message but I don’t know what it means. They have a jerk off reading list lol?

For me, the weirder thing is getting followed by people with zero information in their profiles. “Who are you? Why are you into my stuff? Give me a clue dammit.” It’s a strange information asymmetry between writer and reader.

I assume "reading list" is just another name for a bookmark. So I figure the person just doesn't have time to jerk off to enjoy the story at the moment and plans to come back to it.

No, I don't feel weird about it. But that might be due to the fact that one, it's specific to this site, and two...

I know, inexactly, what it means.

Go to anyone's Member page (via Members Hub) or by clicking on their user name in your Notification. Once there, see the 'Favorites' tab? Click on that to see everything they've 'favorited.' That's one of the possibilities of what happened when you get the 'So&So has added your story to a Reading List'. '

Huh? One of?

It's possible to set up, under your account, multiple reading lists, in addition to your list of favorites. You can make these additional reading lists private (only you can see them) or public (visible, somehow.) If you go to your Author's Control Panel, there should be a 'Reading List' option. Under there, you'll see 'Favorite Stories' (the favorites that show up under your member page) and a "+" (plus) sign where you can create additional reading lists.

For readers:
- If they 'Add Story to Favorites' then it goes directly onto their Favorites list.
- If they 'Bookmark Story' it'll bring up their Reading Lists (including Favorites) and they can pick where to put it.

You'll get the 'Reading List' notification when you've been added to one of these lists, but the notification doesn't seem to differentiate to which list you've been added, whether Favorite or just a 'reading list.'

All I can add here is you can go to their page and see their list of Favorites. This might give you some clue to what they like, in addition to your story.

Also, with my long series, I have noticed a pattern of chapters being marked sequentially in a short period of time, like Chapter Three on Tuesday evening, Chapter Ten on Wednesday afternoon, Chapter Fifteen later that night, and I assume the reader is keeping their place in the series.

Seeing who else they've followed or faved can help in finding stuff I want to read. Though a few folk recently have favourited me though all their other faves and Followed authors are about incest or very heteronormative sex. I mean, I'm happy when people break out of I/T and LW silos for something different, but surprised at how they find me.

If you view your Activities page on a mobile device, there are two different icons for So and so has added you to a reading List. If the icon has a heart ❤️ in it, it is being Favorited. If the icon has a banner/bookmark1653922788488.png in it, it is being put in a reading list of some kind.

Good information. Thanks. The site itself didn't explain this when the change was made.

I assume it works like Amazon, where you post a maybe to your wish list then rediscover it three years later then delete it. I got sent a Reading List before I went to Uni but it wasn't porn.

True, but only the new user interface has the "reading list" option, and a lot of people are still using the old interface. I don't know how the site handles the different options.

"So and So" has favorited your story doesn't bother me. "So and So" is following you makes me look over my shoulder.

Especially when the so and so is following you just so the next time you are posting a story they will know it's massive downvoting time.

It’s kind of funny but also kind of alarming. For years I’ve been reading from this site, happily favoriting and adding to my list, quite frequently re-reading some stories many times. Like an embarrassing amount of times. Then I drank too much one night and had one of my many stupid tales published. Only then did I learn that as an author, a running activity log was also published. Still trying to process that.

I'm a data kind of guy, so when I went to my Works page and saw that I could download the data I was overjoyed. I pulled back the CSV (Comma Separated Values) file and opened it with Excel I found a lot of data that I expected, but there were two columns that mystified me: In Reading Lists and Reading Lists - what's the difference? I can't figure it out, all I know is that the values in Reading Lists are higher than the values in In Reading Lists

Keep in mind that this message can mean one of two things, and you can tell which one it is by looking at whether the message is accompanied by a heart (meaning they've favorited your story) or a bookmark (meaning they've added it to their "to read later" list).

Also, as far as I can tell no notice is given to you, the author, when the reader who has bookmarked your story gets around to reading your story and upgrades the bookmark to a heart. I infer this because I get more bookmarks than hearts but when I consult my daily data summary favorites far outnumber bookmarks.

I like seeing that my stories are getting attention, but I'd prefer to know when they're Favorited.
Same here. I'm flattered over whatever reaction I get, because it tells me that someone reading my story. But to see it as a favorite, means even more. It proves that they really liked it, and might want to read it again.
