Do we believe the read counts?

I've been away for a while and came back to see that my stories have well over 200,000 reads between them. This seems a huge number, especially given the comments are limited to a few dozen. Are the site statistics inflated in any way, do you think? Or perhaps each "read" might just be a few words as users are clicking through?

Maybe. I wonder if bots/web crawlers are counted. I always focus more on the rating

There's no such thing as "read" count. What you are seeing is "views" -- every time somebody clicks on your story. There's no way to know how many of those people actually read your story.

This Site has an enormous readership, I believe the biggest of any erotic story website on Earth. So it's not surprising the view numbers are high.

Your view:comment ratio observations are not unusual.

But yes, you are correct that there probably is odd bot activity that happens from time to time. It's happened to me a couple of times. I know because I've noticed a few instances where views for a story spiked over a day or so to an extreme degree that could not be explained except by something very weird going on.

And I'll add that the "views" counts are clicks to the first page only. There appears to be no metric for reads of all pages.

You can't add up the read counts, because the same people might read every one of your stories. I haven't looked, but say you have 50 stories, each having a reader count of 4,000. That's 200,000 reads, but only 4000 readers. It's unlikely you would have all the stories with absolutely identical readers, but it's really, really unlikely that they were all totally different, that nobody ever read two or more of your stories.

I've always assumed that Manu will know EVERYTHING...

He will have those stats even if we don't?

Speak for yourselves. I firmly believe that each view represents a reader who opened my story, read it, enjoyed it, had a wank, and then decided to become a better person because of my words.

The low vote and comment numbers are simply because all the readers are busy making the world a better place.

Bless you. The world's last true optimist. You are an inspiration for us all.

I'm going to adopt this attitude from now on, with the addition that my stories have helped hot moms around the world get the attention they deserve.

You inspired them so deeply they didn't bother to come back for more.

Not necessarily. If the data is not being tracked, there is nothing to know.

What it looks like the site does is use a page load counter on the first page of stories. This is very basic 90s web tech, and if you saw any websites back in the day with counters on them, they were simply counting how many times the page had been loaded.

Newer methods involve cookies and databases and are more involved, even though they have their own drawbacks.

It is very safe to say that they do have all the voting data. That they are able to do sweeps at all shows us this. They could easily show us how many of each score every story has.

As has been said before, the view count only means that someone clicked on your story, not that they read it. Mu own stats show that about 3 readers per 100 vote and about 1 reader out 1000 leaves a comment.

If your stats follow mine, this means is if you have 200k views, you can probably expect about 6000 votes and about 200 comments total.

Yes, that's my metric, one Vote per 100 Views, one Comment per Thousand. Anything stronger than that, the story has done well.

Correct. Simple tests will show that a View is a click into the first page of a story, and updates your CP immediately. Subsequent pages are NOT counted (as some people seem to think). With a stand-alone story, there's no way of knowing how many people read the whole thing. With chaptered stories you can get more of a clue by looking at the View count on the last chapter.

Agree, they have sufficient to run the sweeps with some effect; and yes they could show the score breakdown but have chosen not to. I suspect it's only a small group of authors who care, and after a while its irrelevant anyway.
