Do the Oscars matter?

I dont understand the hype with awards shows......A bunch of shallow self important people who actually believe their special... Their all millionaire liberals who live a life of excess spout their warped political views to the masses about whats best.....Useless all of them

We watch them - because the "other half" likes to see the clothes...

I watch for the silly hyperbole that is LA-La Land...

To me, the Golden Globes are much more incisive & insightful into what IS good cinema.

But "The Whoopster" is always good for a few (well-scripted) bons mots.

I miss Billy Crystal, however...

The fact that Denzel Washington has never won one of their golden buttplugs is proof enough that Hollywood is chock full of double-talking hypocrites. Yet- some smarmy actress/HO will probably get up and make a speech about civil rights in some third world backwater, and how we're not doing enough to fix the problem tonight, a la that bug-eyed bitch, Susan Sarandon.

Once in a while my evil fantasies get the better of me, and I envision Charleton Heston pulling out an UZI and making sausage meat out of the first three rows of the audience.

Except Tom Hanks. I like Tom Hanks. And Kevin spacey. Those two can live.

Denzel would be safe of course, because they'd make his ass sit in the back of the room.

It's not the Denzel thing that pisses me off. It's the fact that fucking Titanic won so many goddamned awards. That delegitimized the whole thing for me.

Although they say that it's a reward for the actors' work, everyone knows that the Oscars are for the audience, of whom not even 1% care about the show. It's just something to watch to pass the time.

All of them, his body of work (not to mention his body) is exceptional.

My standout movie though is Hurricane.
Training day and John Q are good too, but this movie really does it for me.

By the way, does anyone know the title of the movie where Denzel portrays South African civil rights leader Steve Biko?

But more to the point, no the Oscars have lost whatever relevance they once had.

The most meaningful awards(From the critics I'd say) get little to no press because 50 years ago the academy was a legitimate authority.

Now? Who knows if the members even watch the movies.
